What will happen in 20/21 Season?

I see NSW harness racing have outlined what is going to happen in their state about stakes etc. I would expect at the start of next season that a simillar set of consequences happening in New Zealand, if not worse. The only one we won't have is the drought funding and the ATC don't need coronavirus for a suspension in infrastructure developments.?

Maybe the All Stars won't have any stakes to plunder either side of the Tasman next season. I see NSW said the stakes will go back to normal once 'wagering revenue has recovered at a sustainable level base pizemoney will be restored.” Mmmm...

To that end, as from May11:

- Base Prizemoney will be reduced by 20%,
- Savings in HRNSW operational costs implemented,
- Feature race funding will be reduced,
- Drought Assistance funding will be withdrawn; and
- Infrastructure developments suspended.

A few examples:

HRNSW administrative (staff) and operations costs reductions.

Major infrastructure projects such as the Bathurst Training Centre Development, Tamworth Training Centre Refurbishment and Gold Crown Paceway property purchase will be put on hold.

Industry Drought Assistance will cease from May 3.

Discretionary funding arrangements with Clubs will be addressed with those respective Clubs however these have either been reduced or withdrawn.

“With respect to major races such as the Miracle Mile the $300,000 funding provided by HRNSW unfortunately has been withdrawn.”

I would like to see the Jewels disappear for at least a season. They were an extravagance at a freezing time of year and I am not sure if its day was done anyway.

They could either use this money to supplement Group races for each sex/age group eg NZ Cup or Easter Cup or Derby if major race stakes get cut.

Or they could use to fund general racing throughout the season.  To encourage participation I would like to see a nominated meeting at the end of each month having 2 or 3 'finals' for a higher stake (maybe 5000 more) for horses who qualify for it, firstly on participation during the month, and then performance. The 'final' would be a preferential draw so winners of races throughout the month could still be in it. It might break the monontony of racing for the lower stakes and give trainers / owners something to aim for. Could be broken into all weather and grass tracks venues once Mot and Methven get going.

Happy, the thing with racing in Australia is that you can race so much more often, and place your horses far better than here.

If you have an average horse then you are constantly racing against better horses generally and very hard to make it pay.

In Oz if you aren’t good enough to race in Sydney or Melbourne you can go to Queensland or at a last resort South Australia or Tassie.

Yeah, The Jewels needs to be put on hold for probably 10 years, as it is a big hole for money and will always lose money.

Hopefully we will have enough horses ready to race by the end of May and then throughout the Winter.

Very interesting times for everyone and everyone that is prepared to put their money into having a horse in work deserves every bit of success, hopefully it is shared around though!

If HRNZ and whoever is important have been sitting on ideas which will improve harness racing for all involved then this is the time to chuck it out there. Once things get back into the 'grind' the moment will be lost.

Nothing much else to do so was looking at last years end of season figures( 2019). Compared with previous year some figures of interest.

Average field size similar. Average starts per horse +2.8% . Number of individual horses that started -3%

Races with hot favorites -5%.

Fixed  odds  turnover +1.6%  although fixed odds yield -18%.

off course turnover -13%. On course -5%?   Domestic turnover overall -8%. Overseas turnover on nz harness -21%.

Stakes total + 1.76%.  average per race +2.85.

So turnovers have gone down yet stakes went up slightly. Is that a good business model?

As far as auckland trotting club went.

2018 they had assets worth $193  million but they dropped big time to $126 million in 2019. The below shows why.

The value of the sale of units from there development was below the costs to build them. I guess on top of that they have also lost the high land value that they no longer have. The development project shown on books to be $66 million less than 2018.  also  income from investment properties -1.625 million from 2018.The amount they had borrowed went from $130 million in 2018 to $195 million . Racing revenue  -280,000 and revenue from the tab they have also down.

Given the expected drop in property values this year with many of their apartments still to be sold they must take another hit you would think.  They are  also budgeting for expected income from  rental  space in their new buildings but you would have to wonder about how much that will be impacted by the virus. They are also like all clubs who will take a hit from other areas. e.g sponsorship .

Does anyone know if any of the group races are going to be run at all, or is there no money to be able to run them?

I have heard that the Oaks is not going to be run this year, so those with good 3 year old fillies don’t get to race for black print or a reasonable stake!

Will certainly be good to get NZ racing back and think it’s starts tomorrow with the Greyhounds!

Hopefully,it’s onwards and upwards for racing as it should never have been closed down.

Oz didn’t shut there racing down and they have done a lot better than what we have and their government didn’t crucify the economic sector, like Ardern has and she still controls the sheep that want to listen to her BS!!

Honest john was no doubt referring to a 5 week rest break being good for the many of those who were a bit run down health wise. Many will be re energised .  What can you achieve if your  very run down? Not much.  Maybe Honest john a glass 1/2 full type of guy.

Seriously Galah, it is such a stupid thing to say!!

Yay everyone will be so refreshed now, as business owners have been able to sit on their butts for far longer than should’ve happened!

They will now have so much energy that they will be able to get their stuffed business that took years of hard work up and running again, just because someone wants everyone to save lives! BS!!

2nd day ofZERO cases and we can’t be complacent and let everyone’s good work go to waste.

Yes look at how great I look, I have stuffed the country’s economy but look 4 people in hospital, zero deaths today and zero new positives, but another 1000 unemployed, more businesses in liquidation and many more depressed people, but I look great don’t I?

It is all about control and I have learnt how gullible so many Kiwis actually are.

But yay, we are all refreshed aren’t we?

And some of us have had urgent heart and cancer treatment postponed while empty hospitals wait for covid patients.

Believe in polls or not,but the one that came out last week said labours approval rating was 55% and nationals 29%.

Arderns personal approval rating was 65%.

78% of those polled said nz was heading in the right direction, those doing the polling said it was the highest figure they had recorded since 1991.

Gullible is a bit harsh. They just have different opinions to yours. The poll figures reflect that If you were  to wind back the clock 2 months and told people they could achieve the virus figures at this present time if we were to implement what the government has done, the vast majority would have said ok lets do it and now are saying job well done.

That was a Labour party run and organised poll. Maybe gullible is the word that accurately describes someone who believes it.

Ok Galah, gullible may have been the wrong word!

Maybe plain dumb might be more accurate.

It has been leaked that the Government is expecting 300,000 new benefit applications!!

So yeah what a fantastic job Ardern has done, and when the shite hits the fan you will know heaps of people who are going to be living on $300 odd per week and trying to find someone who will employ them!

Good luck with that, but that is all good, our amazing leader was right in going for weeks longer than she needed to, but everyone is just so refreshed.

Anyway doesn’t affect me at all, it is the sheep that worship her, but her halo will be gone soon.

When all business people are saying we should be open it is telling you something!

She is saying that we are operating at 75% at the moment, if that isn’t BS I don’t know what is!!!!!!!

the colmar brunton poll on 8 april said 88% of new zealanders supported the governments response to the covid 19 outbreak.

Obviously you and the brodster in the 12%.

Having said that i was looking at a poll last week and it showed most  leaders in developed countries showed their approval rating had gone up.  Even donalds was up 3% at 49%,and that in a country where 47% support the  democrats and are unlikely ever to approve anything he does. Scott Morrisons had gone up the most. Ardern i think was 2nd .

No doubt labour support will fade a little as the economic pain kicks in and people judge their decisions based more on their own circumstances that that of the nation as a whole.

I guess it depends what you consider operating Brodie.

Is a restaurant that’s doing take aways consider to be operating? I would assume so even though they are making nothing like they would if they were to open normally.

I went down the main road of a town near where I live today and the only things not operating were the library a hair dressers, $2 shop and a dentists. Most of the offices would be working from home the retailers I saw were open but you couldn’t walk into the shop you had to order at the door.

Galah, on the 8th April I didn’t have any problem apart from the fact that they were slow in closing the border and others should’ve been quarantined.

Since the no.s have dropped to single figures she has totalling stuffed up and is doing far more damage to everyone’s life, that needed.

I am not going to continue on about this,  as there are clearly some that think that she walks on water.

Let us see what happens over the next month and then come back to me, and confirm that Brodie is wrong and our esteemed leader was right!!!!

BS!!!
if we were only down by 25% then why are they expecting 300,000 benefit applications.

There are going to be that much blood on the floor with businesses laying off heaps in the next few weeks!

We have had no positives in NZ for 2 days and pathetically low no.s for over a week now and yet 1000 per day is enrolling at WINZ!!!!

Yeah she is going great!

Baaa!

If she takes a day or two off Level 3 and makes Level 2 something near normal while moving focus from health to the economy that halo could hang around quite a bit longer.

You better be careful Brodie,  because the way you are going the TAB and the SIS could be on your tail if you keep going, and, sooner or later, one of those 3 letter acronyms will catch up to you.
