Jewels event review rating 4 out of 10

Recommended Posts

Review rating 4 out of 10 here are the reasons why:

  1. Industry Lounge was over sold by up to approx 50 people. This area was an area for owners trainers and members & their friends. On the Cambridge Raceway website it was advertised that this area was reserved seating. When people made their booking they had to indicate in the blank box - whose table they wished to sit at. So they could be matched up and seated with them. However this for ALL did not happen. Some people arrived before the 1st race and as ALL the seats and tables were taken they had to stand or go elsewhere for the day, (into general areas) as obviously other areas were already all booked up on the day! INCREDIBLE. WHAT A F. UP! The major F. UP of the DAY!

  2.  What was up with the caged area with barriers out, like you thought you were keeping out or keeping in a bunch of animals in the general admission Corona Bar area???

  1. Why did you advertise on the website that the after party started at 4.30 til late, when your people (security guard) turned away those that started turning up at the Club House from 4.30pm, stating that they had to leave and come back again in 30 minutes, or 20 minutes or 10 minutes??? Not a good look and horrifying to watch this happen.
  2. Why in the Sports room area did you have 4 TAB machines and only 2 worked???
  3. Why did you accept 1 person to get a round of drinks for a table in the Sports room and then when the group wanted another round they were shut off from getting anymore drink? What is up with that early in the day???
  4. Why later in the day was their a limit on drinks when people would go up in the Sports room of only 2 per person. So very inconvenient if someone in your group was going to wait in the line, and rather than you ALL have to go up to get a drink, they go get 3 or 4 for the rest of the GROUP. But NO they could only get 2.
  5. Why was there not clear signing to the restrooms and/or also people being advised where the restrooms are and a tip at the gate to tell the ladies where there are some restrooms that hold many loos within that are not far away, like just over there, so ladies are not left waiting in a big long for the toilet queue, while the other restrooms that people don’t know about are left being un-used or used minimally???
  6. Why have a free drink voucher for the industry lounge people yet when they go to the bar in the industry lounge to get it they are told they cannot get it there and they have INCONVIENTLY go down to another room area to get it????
  7. Why did you Not hand out to EVERYONE a free drink and bet voucher at the gate that was required to get 1 along with the FREE bet that was advertised prior on your website??? Because not EVERYONE got theirs.
  8. There are a couple of other things, but as they are more nit picking will leave mentioning.

Truely disappointed and disgusted. What a Mickey Mouse, 2nd rate show you put on.

While you kick butt at marketing your deliver on a big EVENT is simply NOT up to scratch and its unforgivable and that is being polite.

The old puke material happened again as it always does with the same old same old tonguing and cuddly of everyone, even though they Have done it just so many times!!!!

What on earth is that all about FFS?

If they want to do it, then go for it but does the bloody cameraman beed to show the shit??????

Plunder the stake money and then gloat about it in front of all,and sundry, GET A LIFE!

As you say jones, you have said nothing but positive things about the jewels. So its disappointing to hear that the club failed to deliver for many of those who attended. All sounds poorly organised.

As i referred to in another thread,i thought the trackside coverage of the races was also poor in the early stages of the races. It was like they were experimenting with the drone coverage and were far away in the early races, then all of a sudden switched to close ups for 150m of a couple of horses, then back to normal coverage. No continuity at all in the first part of the races.

Sounds a bit of a shame they didn't deliver for many of those who attended on course,as the racing on the track was top class, and the unpredictability of the tactics caused by the draws made it much more entertaining.

Not good, sorry to hear about your on course experience - imagine the amount of first time race goers there yesterday, will they return??????

From a viewers point of view I thought the racing was great, pressure on the leaders in most races and drivers not afraid to sit 3 wide and at least put their horse into the race.

Sadly a huge downside was the race caller making multiple mistakes with names, yes we all make mistakes but on the biggest day and to call 'Akuta' probably the most impressive winner on the day the wrong name and lets be honest totally stuff up the the last 300 meters due to forgetting the horses name was a disappointment.

Jones, was the crowd all in the bars?

The crowd didnt look that big on the ground or grandstand shen the races were on?

It seems to be more about selling hospitality packages for big money nowadays!

If they can get away with it and it helps the clubs then it is positive, however those that go oncourse need to be punting and repeat punters I would hope.

What's with that Kennard woman having an convulsion after every win - shoving her tongue down everyone's throat,  just for the tv cameras seemingly.

I thought she might be auditioning for a part on Shitland Street.

Very Very WEIRD.

But I did enjoy the racing and the competitiveness of some of the driving. David Butcher in the first giving it to Nat was a highlight of the day.

Well that is really Heartbreaking. BOAY has seen for 2 months how much you were looking forward to the Big day of racing . That experience for you truly shattering as you deserved a Great day out , based on the early enthuasism. Am very sorry that happened Jonesy.

Threads here have the usual downward spiral for Harness comments as puke material, boring , all Labour's fault, etc.

In reality , one of the most TACTICAL driving, some of the Best Horses Ever , one of the most BRILLIANT racedays ever broadcast. 2 wins each to the countries 'Top' horsepeople  of Mark Purdon, Tony Herlihy, John Dunn and Natalie Rasmussen (who 'destroyed' the nice field of 4 yearolds in the last race to wind it all up with SCArden )

AKUTA could be the next LAZARUS, absolutely smashing it !!!!! stunning !! coming from last 5 wide on corner , and home by 10l , and the commentator got his name wrong up the straight?. oh dear.

The drone was TERRIFIC in my opinion , showing the positioning going into the first corner. Amazing shots !! well done broadcast team, that was top notch stuff.  couldn't see any trackside interviews in Aus.

Gammalite Rating  10/10  for the days racing !

Im with you , thought it was as good as you could get given the conditions. 21.80 for Bolt at Tabcorp was a massive bonus after having a decent crack on Amazing Dream in the first. Seems some were more interested in getting it beaten than trying to secure the best for their own horses connections.

an amazing price for Bolt ! I finished well down on the punt , but had a good NUDGE in the wallet from attending Oaks day and Derby day at Eagle Farm recently (in beautiful 23 degree sunshine too) so all good.

Those kiwi horsemen are Terrific ! given the rain and conditions, they just got on with it without batting an eyelid. although maybe HIGHGROVE hit a softer spot possibly? who knows?

Amazing 'Dream' was a bit of a 'nightmare' lol..., but she has had plenty of wins anyway. and Nat made up for it in the last race with South Coast Arden with a great drive. (couldn't back it though, given the quality of that field)

Just show the bloody race FFS. Cambridge on a normal Thursday was much better viewing.

I'll offer a different opinion then.

In a ticketed area for the day. And can only say good things about the entire experience.

Constantly supply of food and drink, minimal wait times, good, friendly tote staff and an excellent viewing space for each race - even shelter for when the heavens opened up.

Also struck not being able to head into the Sports Bar but was kindly guided to the Clubhouse where it was excellent to meet, mix and enjoy a drink with many of the big names of the day.

Overall, having attended every Harness Jewels meeting that has been held, I rated yesterday as the most enjoyable and excitable day of them all taking into account everything.

My only complaint was having to wait until Race 9 to have a decent collect for the day.

Hey that is really excellent then ! am totally jealous (not of the weather lol, but the great racing)

They were all having a crack yesterday. even Mr Ferguson driving Classy Operator in the two year old . wasn't waiting for Akuta to go , launching a 4 wide attack, down the back-straight a long way out. Wasn't that far from 2nd placing as it turned out at the end lol....... (6th) . So many drivers having a big day having to think their way through those races. How good Akuta ? that was amazing.

Nat grabbing the prize in race 9 with South Coast Arden (what a well calculated drive that was) in a 1.51.6 mile.

Holy cow! not bad in wet track at Cambridge track. fair dinkum hiking.

Some of the most competitive racing I've seen for a long time. Really aggressive driving which makes for a nice change from our usual timid stuff.

Cambridge is the perfect track for it, really. That track coupled with the draws of many meant that nothing was straightforward. Every horse had to work to get their win.

Ill try to offer up some positives, hence I gave it a 4 out of 10 not a 1 out of 10, the staff were very friendly, super cool actually. The weather did not bother, had mentioned that earlier prior the day. The staff were really good with keeping an eye on people if it looked like later in the evening peeps were starting to get out of control. I felt while peeps were having fun, drinking and stuff it wasn't a bad ugly mess. I think the staff were on a watch out for that. No I did not have a horse racing. And no Sugar Apple the lil cutie horsey that he is is NOT my horse. He was just part of the fun BOAY 2 y-o game I created.

YES things had been lifted compared to past years Big Bang, that was what I had hoped. Just a reminder incase you missed it and it may ALL be coincidence But to try to help the club, 2 ish months out I started a thread on here called Countdown til the Jewels, this soon after got picked up by HRNZ who then ran with it followed by Cambridge. (or maybe it was just a coincidence ....). Therefore Cambridge got so much promotion and publicity from it. Which was great.

I also suggested a long Queens weekend away for a VIP American celeb and remember Ludwig disliked this idea and down voted me/it e.g. the idea was a planned 3 day itinerary e.g. Rotorua/Mt, Hobbiton, Cambridge Jewels and to stay local. This idea seemed to be picked up too, with an article being put in Sunday magazine, but targeting not VIPs but domestic travellers to Cambridge and a 3 day itinerary was given for  ideas for domestic travellers to Cambridge on Queens Bday weekend including a day at Jewels a sponsored page. (again maybe a coincidence ...).

Also after I had suggested on here then be great to get VIPs at the Jewels, remember again Ludwig down voted and I said that bit about the PM and how having her there be a great incentive to get the Hollywood big shot there because he rates here re Covid, well approx 1-2 weeks later the Boys Get Paid area moved from level 1 right hand side, to ground floor right hand side, and what appeared on website was a NEW area called VIP in their place and as it turned out the Deputy PM attended (again maybe coincidence).

Lastly remember we were talking about Bad to the Bone on here when we said that Copy That Z Butcher drove him in the sires series heat to win but then next drive jumped off onto Bad to the Bone, well a few hours later on the Camb, Facebook page the very pic of Copy That and Z Butcher winning that very heat race at Cambridge they put up. (again maybe a coincidence).

Only mention this as the above incase people think Im just being all negative etc. NO I really wanted to HELP them, promote and be enthusiastic. It would seem some of these ideas had been picked up by them, to help make it a better day 😄 Point being why would I come on here & after all of trying to help as above write a negative review. Was thinking I would be writing a glowing review and telling peeps hahaha eat it, it was a big great turnover hehe. However, Im still disappointed I haven't even bother to look it up.

Don't complain much about things. AND its sad that Iv had to come out and say this. What I have said is TRUE in my original post. I based my opinion on the day based on my overall experience. (This has nothing to do with the horses or the actual races etc). People write hotel reviews, car rental reviews, restaurant reviews & so on, in service hosp industries. The experiences vary. YES other people that did not see what I saw or were in other areas, will have had a different experience and some probably a great experience with NO hiccups. And that is fantastic for them. BUT I am not changing my stance no matter if peeps elsewhere are saying maybe Im bitter and making up random reasons for why I am saying what happened happened. Sad really that I have to even feel like I have to justify saying what I am saying here.

Brods yes there were lots more peeps on track, many peeps stay in the areas to watch, but many also go out. Id say maybe 1/2 go out 1/2 stay in or maybe 1-3 to 2-3s.

As a service provider they need to take ALL feedback the positive and the negative and look into these things. Verify the feedback and then improve on it and pat themselves on the back for the things they DID RIGHT, if they are lucky enough to get another chance. The date is moving if it goes ahead next year no more winter. I would still NEVER GO AGAIN if they were lucky to hold it in summer. Remember it is a big day, and MANY areas to organise. Obviously due to this, some parts were overlooked.

Well if National Party organised nobody would turn up😂😂

Of course they wouldnt, as it would be held at Addington over 1980metres.

Labour government are really great planners arent they?

Every single thing they have tried has either not got off the ground or effed up!!!
To be fair they have been very successful in having 5 times more people waiting on a State house since they arrived!!

Sites gone quiet, was thinking about its now the countdown til Ill be gone, not long now. Looks like Hunts and Ranga have tapped out early. Noticeably missing.

Was thinking today about a lil old man, that didn’t have a table/seat his group didn’t (obviously they had arrived expecting one) and they were cornered up by stairs that lead out to grandstand. Eventually they must of found a seat & put it by the stairs for him, nowhere else for them to put it, (as the poor old sole was having trouble standing). In hindsight wish I had of spoken to him, or at least smiled at him as I walked past.

There was also 1 other person that hit my mind today, a lady who was celebrating her birthday & their group prob about 10 of them, they had thought they had a table booked but didn’t.

There are others I know of that also missed out that thought they had a table booked. Also equally disappointed. Anyways moving on.

On another note, Sugar Apple (who is not my horse lol Davis I think you have started something) earned his start fair and square by the rules of the race. Noticed no-one complained when Green threw in American Dealer in the lead up race, so that race got off the ground for other participants. Also same thing re House threw in a horse for Easter Cup to make sure it got off the ground, no complaining then. It is about give and take. Not just take, take take and when it suits.

PS on a positive note 😄 there was great hip fun music playing outside out by the food truck area. Food truck area looked good 😄

To be fair though, there were many horses that clearly qualified only because others did not go because of where the Jewels were run this year, at Cambridge!

Look most people have an opinion on the Jewels Day, and if it gets you excited and keeps horses racing then it is a good idea to hold them even though it is not a profit making thing for the industry.

Hopefully Addington holds it next time over 1980metres but they need to change the time of the year they run it surely?

Read an article on the Oz site that it has been confirmed that it is NOT going to be held in Winter again. And that they have not yet decided if it will run again. That is up in the air.

Interesting Jones.

Definitely silly decision to continue in June as too wet and cold.

As for why they may not run again is because it is a huge loss venture for harness racing with the stakes and travel costs!

Does anyone know what HRNZ pays out in travel costs to participants????

Seem the best horses are generally in Canterbury, run something at Addington over 1980 metres.

Do Cup Day and Show Day make money?

I thought the spoils between Northern and Southern horses were evenly spread?  More so when you took into account where the owners were from.

Think you are right in your 'generally' statement.

But you have to support North Island trotting too. (if you are HRNZ)

Afterall , they still won some Jewels with the Two Herlihy trotters, BD JOE, and SouthCoastArden.

and everyone is complaining about the drop-off in the North of horse numbers , so support there is Ultra Important for the industry.
