Where is everyone?

Just watched the first from Tarzino day Hastings, the grandstand is not so grand, no one there, is there something else on in Hastings? A Bunnings sausage sizzle perhaps?

Not a good look for Gr1 day, the new CEO might have his work cut out, may have to bring back that icon Butch, he'll have them flocking through the turnstiles.....

Sign of the times, I noted the lack of people at rugby last night, a far cry from old Waikato Auckland match,

Ranfurly Shield in Napier today, probably be a few there, TV has been good and bad for sport/racing.

Well having a shield game and a G1 raceday on the same day suggests no one in either sport has a clue , maybe some bright spark could have thought why not try and make it a package deal so people could go to both , sounds almost like a half decent weekend then .

Why am i even suggesting it , both sports are clueless .

They certainly weren't in the Waikato last night watching rugby thats for sure.

Nobody wants to go to watch racing these days ,far to drawn out thats why 20/20 cricket was invented.

The MCG was only half full for Demons v Lions last night, WTF is going on? Are people saving for the coming recession?

I myself rarely go to sports events these days as i'm not sure if my car will still be where i parked it  or some criminal decided that something of value in my house to me is of more value to them.

Gone are the days when you can leave the house or car unlocked,  New Zealand ain't the country it once was.

Mate there is no longer any such thing as "Shield Fever". Rugby is stuffed. In Wellington Football would be at least 3 times more popular in participation.

I have mentioned this before, but I will repeat for you as you are an expat. Karori Waterside Football on their website states that they have 1,000 players and 100 teams. Wests Rugby which covers from Karori to Khandallah / Ngaio only has two senior teams.  If it were not for the polynesian community in Wellington the game would be dead.

Racing as we know is a sunset industry. The land has been sold so once the funds are blown then it will most likely be "Game Over"

I have decided to go to Riccarton for The Cup Day as I want to pay honour to one of the greats, Show Gate ( she has been laid to rest there) who I witnessed completing an amazing treble during Cup Week in 1974

I said that in a thread a couple of months back but apparently the administrators are all good it is the stakeholders who are at fault.

Quite some years ago we had a ' breakfast '  meeting at Riccarton.

There was as international rugby game on at Lancaster Park - Springboks I think ? -  and the first race went off at 8.30 from memory. ( Helen Preston trained the winner of the first )

There was breakfast on offer for patrons and a bus service to the rugby after races were over.

The prospect of a heavy frost was the only likely problem, as in those days we used to get some beauties.  However, the ground was only slightly crisp and the day went off well.

I gather the concept was a resounding success,  but never repeated.

Remember that day Freda.

Why a race day is spread over 5 to 6 hours is beyond me and simply not what is relevant today, lives too busy.

First race 1.30pm, 10 races with the last at 4.30pm, 20 minutes between races.

Going to the races for 6 hours is as boring as btashyte. Different in Aussie, Flemington in particular, where the quality of horses is so much better and they introduce much color and theatre with parade rings and fully mounted walk around with jocks on board. One feels involved.

You should come to a race day here on the 'Goldie' Turny, every Sat, and some midweeks, the bars are full, the restaurants booked out weeks in advance, and, when it rains, and it does, tropical rain of course, the meeting is abandoned, we still have a ''phantom' meeting, good turnouts still and plenty of food and beer at reasonable prices........races coming through from all over AUS, bookies ring pumping, ....and that's in winter!.......bring on those 30 degree days, Hawaiian shirts, Okanui's, [board shorts] thongs,[jandals] and a thirst and appetite......for good racing. You're always welcome here you good buggers!

Been there many times Joe and very enjoyable. Always stayed downstairs in the betting ring which was full if theatre ... probably the best ring in Aussie ... Randwick is good but Flemingtin, on an average Saturday, only has 5 or 6 bags at the rear of the new stand.

NZ has no on course theatre ... bland and boring

And throw in Riccarton as that is worth something today .... but after they loose GN week and the big races during Cup Week it will be worth zilch

Luke, your are pushing shite uphill if you think anyone at NZTR gives a flying fig about your Punter's Club.

It's a great idea, but only a distraction to those in the committee room yesterday - they were dealing with a water logged track, the poorest fields seen on the first day of that carnival - Te Akau only took a few down out of their couple of hundred in work....plus a total lack of interest from the local business, who are all suffering under the current regime.

On a positive note, well done to owner/ breeder, Paul Hester whose mare made it two from two, and looks like getting another couple down the track. Good bloke is Paul.

94 they ran a early meet at Riccarton, before shield match, Otago v Canterbury, October 1 so no problem of a frost, I was at that game, Otago supporters took in the races early then off to the rugby, one figure who was part of the Otago clan was Rex Cochrane  who had just retired from training 2 weeks earlier, must have been a odd feeling, being at Riccarton , no horses, just a spectator, shield fever was certainly alive and well those days.

Well I've got no show of having 2 runners Karaka night, nor 1, but I know someone who has, lucky bastard, no, I'll rephrase that, not lucky at all, just a chancer, a risk taker, so good luck to him, I hope the dice rolls.......the right way.
