Anyway the party will go on regardless and even if they cancel after one race the on course turnover(inter track) will still be higher than anything else in the NZ for the year to date(except maybe Railway Day)

Getting back to that wingatui boxing meeting apparently oncourse was around 130k, with the fixed odds betting added, 1.7mill off course, kumara will eclipse that, but yeah that 400k in stakes at wingatui at head scratcher, I fail to see the kumara attraction, do they still charge 20$ entry.

party, relaxed atmosphere, unique country experience - funnily enough all quite popular parts of a raceday something nztr haven't a clue about.

Trentham crowd looks embarrassing, so much for the arguement for supporting relocated clubs meetings elsewhere(yes I know this is a relocated meeting) doesn't work.

In Welly anything with more than two people is an event, or an 'orgy'........nothing else to do.

Many a small country meeting with all the above, but don't attract those crowds, and probably have better facilities, I would have been for 15 years or so, may have been the first year of a cancelled meetings, think they tried to dry with the helicopter that day, not sure if they still charge 20$ for entry.

There may have used to have been plenty that did attract a crowd - I used attend a number of them, they made nzracing what it was , but they've ben mostly deleted by the powers that be,this will eventually go the same way under the current agenda.

No idea on the entry fee.

Tauherenikau charge $20 entry fee for 18 years and over and they flock there including myself. Another massive crowd on 2 January.

They have a camping ground which was very full the night before the races and I counted 35 marquees set up at the back of the bird cage on race day.

Like a hippie at a music/weed festival they follow like sheep, last time I went I had to swim out of the place.

If the Coast has a month of fine weather beforehand, it's fine on the day and the whitebait is on the house, Kumara maybe OK.

You would have done a few laps around that track in your day, I can recall going there on a wet day way back, was only fit for gumboots that day, I only stayed for three races, did see some whitebait patties on the TV, thought they would of been in short supply this year, maybe the imported some in, season was a shocker by all counts, good to see them get through day unscathed and with good weather.

The day was great, good atmosphere, very hot [ again ] hospitable committee members, and a very emotional Kelsey when winning the Nuggets for her biggest fan, Kenny Rae for whom she used to work.

All round good vibe and the track was fine too.  As was the whitebait.!

Good that you found the committee members hot and hospitable. Any in particular?

I think you will find the oncourse was 65k not 130k $1.7m off course hmmmmmmmmm. I will check that. Immediate reaction I doubt it

Well your options are limited if you want to bag the Coast.  Perhaps go attend Tim's next offering

The bagging of clubs certainly gets tiring.

I don't feel old but maybe I am as attending galloping race meetings at Westport, Hokitika, Omakau, Gisborne, Wairoa and Thames seems like yesterday.  All gone for what appear bullshit reasons, and all venues with a similar theme, all holiday hot spot destinations which served as memorable first race day experiences for many New Zealanders and overseas visitors alike.

There's nothing like winning a race at Trentham yet if the Marton meeting there yesterday was anything to go by the RACE committee may have their work cut out getting attendances anywhere near those of the halcyon days for the 150th Wellington Cup meeting.  Fees to attend over the next three weeks reflect the elitist thinking of current racing administrators both locally and nationally.  Maybe their mainstreaming and App facilities were on the blink when the packed out country facilities were on show over the Christmas/New Year period.

But wait, there's more ... the new licensing system is just around the corner.  Forget about the real issues racing has like not being able to get through an entire card without incident.

I take my hat off to those involved in racing at grass roots level.  You keep up the momentum whatever the pressure.  You create the stories and history and make racing what it is.  Please do not let those "at the top" with their heads firmly up their arse treat you otherwise.

I used to go every year,  there's nothing like it. Arrive Friday night, booze up in the rec,  sat, take bus or own cars to track and enjoy the day,  then back to the pub again. Late night then leave next day.  We stopped going when Brent (owner)  his loopy wife farked our bookings up.  It rained next few years then we stopped going.

You better start going again HJ, by the look of yesterday it was a ripper of a day.

It was a good day even for someone who has not always been a Kumara fan.  They were a lot closer to cancellation than I let on though - a certain Stipe(the same one who tried to close down Greymouth and did close down our day) was determined on Friday that the meeting was not going to go ahead.  The Secretary(an ex Stipe himself) looked like he had not slept for a week due to the pressure

The drums were beating for sure, after the reefton debacle, I thought the outlook for kumara was very grim, but very happy the track handled well, and they had a very successful day, guess the way things are now, two out of three ain't bad,
