Remember TAB Staff

Looking at another thread....somebody talked about TAB staff.

A couple I remember from yesteryear, guy called John from Edgeware TAB. Grumpy old bugger....and his wife was good looking, we all thought that. Ha Ha.

And Muzza from Shirley TAB, loved his dogs....and all sorts of funny rumours when he went. They were the days when TABs were hidden down alley ways etc

When i lived in Ch Ch,used to bet a lot at the bush inn, what a rude prick that guy was.I used to like a bet and sometimes quite large,he just give you a dirty look. And the look on his face if you had a good collect, you would swear it was his  own money he was paying you with.Soon stopped betting there ,hahahhaa.

Had some nice greyhounds to, we got a pup off them, showed some toe, until it blew a toe, never the same after.

Tony and can't remember his wife's name, lovely couple at Browns bay tab..long gone, I used to write out my slip and hand over the money when I was 14/15 no questions asked,  good old days when just the radio to listen to races in the tab and the the Teletext for the odds. Now there is only a pub tab in a huge place like browns bay...it's a big drive for me now if I want to find an Agency to make a decent withdrawal!

I must have gambling problem, i remember all of the ones mentioned.

Loved spending an arvo at the Excelsior in town, sadly quakes put paid to it. Think it was first pub tab in chch, thought it was great having beer & punt. Or maybe avonhead was first pub tab, not sure

Excelsior had a great bunch of punters when i used to work there  remember the guys gave me $10 to put on dog pick 6 and we won $1000 but i was a one hit wonder we never cracked another one again ??

Exactly the same for me in Kilbirnie and Miramar Flagship. No questions asked and I was the same age. Filling out yellow slips for 50cent doubles, listening on the radio, and lining up with other punters feeling like a million bucks and 10 ft tall after picking a winning combo. Simple innocent times. None of those TABs exist in their old location now ,although Miramars hung around untill recently .Like some of the snooker halls I frequented as a teenager, the TAB gave one a sense of entering a den of iniquity with an undercurrent of shady dealings, although from memory those running the outlets were all pretty convivial.

The main chch tab years ago was in Manchester St if I remember.....going there on a sat morn was fantastic....people everywhere.

Same with tab in new Brighton mall 30 yrs ago. Before malls came along....this was a really busy branch on a sat.

Yip i remember going to the TAB in New Brighton mall when i was around 12 years old,all by myself.Going there to get the scratchings for the old man who was crook. No one really questioned me as to why i was there, putting the scratchings into the Turf Digest...ah good memories.

Yeah that was my choice of Tabs , it could have 75 to 100 there on a Friday night  and Saturday 100 to 150 even more to be honest..

Good staff, clean and knowledgeable punters around you but even better the Coachman 50 metres down the road .

Scotch fillet and a pint Friday nights between races , Saturday’s  a burger and chips then back to the punting.

It was in Gloucester Street across from Issac Theatre
