Very poor show from Pukekohe allowing the crossing to become a H & S issue resulting in ARBY losing it's rider after attempting to jump it. Hampered 4 other horses in doing so, not to mention the dangers of a riderless horse and in a prestigious race. The side on trackside camera showed a distinct sharp rise and fall and certainly not level to the rest of the track as required. Crossings are hugely problematic and if Auckland Racing are serious about safety they should seriously contemplate a tunnel instead of a HUMP Here's an NZTR guideline that references "LEVEL"...which it clearly aint "Crossings must be consistent with the course proper in terms of surface levels, camber/crossfalls, surface hardness, profile/depth, and visual appearance so that horses are not put off stride when approaching, crossing and exiting the Crossing. Prior to each race meeting any build up of material on the Crossing must be removed and the crossing leveled to ensure a consistent surface free of ridges and depressions. Miniu venue guideline standards – fifth edition septeber 2013 9 All course proper track crossings must be covered with grass on race day, unless the local RIU Stipendiary Steward has granted dispensation. Definitely ahead, with Lilly's head advanced and visually looking to go on by, before the bite The head-on film showed the reason JACKAROO turned, and appeared to bite, was that CARIGNAN rolled in and made contact with JACKAROO. Mr Goodwin said this was a very unusual situation and a difficult decision to call. Biting/ nip irrelevant Given the mutual involvement of both horses in the incident—CARIGNAN’s inward movement preventing Ms Hercock from using the whip, and JACKAROO’s retaliation causing CARIGNAN to change stride—it is not clear that either horse was significantly disadvantaged to the extent that it affected the finishing order. More garbage, 1 strike v carting C out 5 widths down the straight while biting and behind C at the time Considering the complexity and unusual nature of the incident, as noted by Mr Goodwin, the Adjudicative Committee concluded that there were insufficient grounds to justify altering the original race result. In order to align the Rules with the International Agreement it is proposed that Rule 638(3)(f) be amended as follows: (f) Without limiting the generality of subrule 638(3)(e), in a Flat Race or Jumping Race, a Trial (including jump-outs and/or tests for certification purposes) a Rider must not use his or her whip: (i) forward of the Rider’s horse’s shoulder or in the vicinity of its head; or (ii) using an action that raises the Rider’s arm above shoulder height; or (iii) when the Rider’s horse is out of contention of winning or otherwise finishing in the first five placings; or (iv) when the Rider’s horse is showing no response; or (v) after passing the winning post; or (vi) in a manner that causes a welt and/or injury to the Rider’s horse; or (vii) when the Rider’s horse is clearly winning; or (viii) when the Rider’s horse has no reasonable prospect of improving or losing its position; or (ix) in a manner where the seam of the flap is the point of contact with the horse, unless the Rider satisfies the Stewards that that was neither deliberate nor reckless, or (x) on the flank of the Rider’s horse; or (xi) forward of the Rider’s saddle whilst the whip is held in the forehand position.

andicapper’s Blog 18/11 The New Zealand Cup carnival provides the perfect finale to New Zealand’s spring racing. The 3-day, Group 1 carnival is unique, and fits ideally on the back of Melbourne Cup week. It is a busy racing week, with 9 meetings programmed across the country, and invariably presents numerous re-ratings of interest. We touch on Open race winners below. Feature Open race winner ratings: Bella Waters Gartshore Tauranga Stakes, Group 2, $150k 98 Mehzebeen Martin Collins NZ Cup, Group 3, $400k 97 Kopua TAB Mile, Group 3, $250k 96 Mystic Park Lindauer Stewards, Listed, $140k 95 Bella Waters entered the Tauranga Stakes as a rating 84 horse and risked a large re-rating for a top 4 finish - given she was competing at WFA against a 105-rated horse, Ladie’s Man, and other high-rating horses at the level weights. In winning she beat two rating 98 horses, Pearl Of Alsace and Mali Ston, in a tight finish. Given the narrow margins, and the relative weights, a re-rating to 98 (+14) was appropriate. Any less of a re-rating would have her receiving weight at their next meeting under handicap conditions, which is not equitable. The risk and benefits of running a progressive horse in a race under these conditions is a balancing act. No doubt Cambridge Stud factored these, and the calculated risk has paid dividends with Bella Waters now a Group-2 winning mare. In terms of feedback, Kopua was the most contentious re-rating of the week with his 9-point re-rating for the TAB Mile win. The entry of Perfect Scenario (rating 107) pushed the majority of field to 53kgs and out of the handicap. Kopua was 6 points out of the handicap (ie. In a precise handicap he would have carried 50kgs). To give Kopua a re-rating 6 points or less for the win would see the entire field facing him again at exactly the same weights set-up. Kopua was given 3 points for the win, and 6 points for the out of handicaps adjustment. In simple terms, had the race been run again Kopua would carry 54.5kgs. Mehzebeen and Mystic Park were standard feature race re-ratings of 5 points, given no issues with out of handicap. Previously, Mehzebeen had attracted an 8-point re-rating on Day 1 for an out of the handicap win in the Metropolitan Trophy (Listed). In that race also, Beavertown Boy was re-rated 7 points for his 2nd placing, moving him 1kg below the winner at that point in time.
