  2. which way is the sun setting? Meanwhile, a interesting background into current AU Clubs.. " Straight Up – Clubland, politics and chaos By Bren O'Brien - September 26, 2024 You might recall earlier in the year we wrote a story about the perilous state of the balance sheets of Australia’s biggest racing clubs. The corporate betting revolution of the past 10 years has essentially enriched PRAs, while leaving race clubs searching for alternative business models. The Melbourne Racing Club annual report released this week showed that less than half its revenue is derived directly from its racing activities. For the Brisbane Racing Club that number is around 61 per cent. On a pure revenue versus expenses basis, racing, taken as its own commercial activity, loses money for both of those clubs. One club official recently said that when you consider that racing represented just 6.5 per cent in terms of the usage of their venue, it took up a lot of their bandwidth as a business. Then there is the politics. Race clubs have always been political, but there seems to be a peak in the level of upheaval, either at executive or board level, in the past 12 months. The Australian Turf Club has been the most public of these as it considers the proposal to essentially close and sell off Rosehill. This has caused a massive reaction from the membership, and a split in the board on a few key aspects, including on the potential valuation of the project. It has also put the future of chairman Peter McGauran under sharp focus. The $1.6 billion question ATC board fractured on current and potential Rosehill valuation Read Then we have the Melbourne Racing Club. The resignation of CEO Josh Blanksby was just the tip of the iceberg as the club committee has been fractured over the past couple of months. Three board members have campaigned, albeit unsuccessfully, for a spill of the board, while legal letters have rained like confetti. With an AGM scheduled for Thursday night, Matt Cain leaves the chairmanship. He spoke to The Straight’s Warwick Barr about the key issues the MRC is facing. Boardrooms, ballots and potential legal bunfights The battle for power at the MRC Read The Brisbane Racing Club’s election is not expected to be as heated, but it will be competitive with two new candidates battling with three existing board members for three vacant seats. The sudden departure of CEO Tony Partridge in July raised some questions, while there is set to be a change of chairmanship next year with Neville Bell in line to retire after a long-term on the board. All of this when the BRC Masterplan, which has involved significant construction around Eagle Farm and Doomben, is at a crucial point of its development. Meanwhile the new CEO of the Victoria Racing Club, Kylie Rogers, has been doing the media rounds ahead of the spring carnival and penned an impassioned letter to the members this week. PRAs are far from immune from politics. In the latest development from the Rosehill inquiry, Racing NSW has been in the middle of discussions in NSW parliament this week, with a submission by the regulator referred to the parliamentary privileges committee for possible contempt. 3. He must be due another decent one, it's been a while... I actually have some nice photo of Colons best one, that long ago CW was still wearing shorts when leading the horse back to scale! Gee, I recall way back then, there were problems, around the mistakes in that years Free Handicap for that season.
  4. I am always interested to see how anyone approaches a H&S a problem like this workplace problem. My starting point would be to approach the coalface workers, especially so in this instant! I've always found most track workers are happy to share their problems and joys! To 'use' Facebook and claim you are not going 'public' is a tad naïve. Ripe for plenty of unbidden... Sigh, not really surprising, historically 'Head Office' would use Procedural Politics more the Vatican in dealing with mavericks like Colon. Of course, that can lead to unbidden.. Yip, and anther thing to add to that long list of mistakes 'that we have learned from'. Almost quite sad that it actually has come to this, so early in the lives of these track!
  5. dear one ask why? So! the fat lady has sung? we can put up the W? Did, will this make the mainstream media?
  6. tick.... later, rumours abounded, that! some's nose's grew faster that the grass in the weeks after... A lot riding on it! I never got to see any races live, did manage to get the phone working for the open race, to see, that perhaps! the person driving the Action camera was all over the place! @TAB For Ever serious question, what do you think of the coverage, not the 'talking heads', but the actually coverage where we See the horse?
  7. By chance this popped up on my fb memories. Around the 12 min mark, to a ?? from Steve about Wages at Head Office. Note how 'patsy' all three were when Saundry Firmly states we are not going there! and not a peep! sigh, I copy my comments from back then after watching this episode. " debbiedavid4725 5 years ago how was he allowed to get away with this comment "I'm not going to debate wages"..... also perhaps the reason that 'not enough people bet on nz races' might be because its a industry that shits on the person called 'the punter'... re it employs 50000 workers? how many of them on minimum wage? how many on Living Wage? tiz a Sunset Industry, move the chairs as much as you like will not be changing that! the only thing of merit was the decision about Digital platform! of which the Industry is years behind! and drifting further behind!
  8. to right! or is it yeah right! though, on this one! we all be keen to see $1.05 go up and CW gets a W
  9. perhaps, the chief 'whale' is growing old.... and of course 'on course' @Ell is his protégée in place... as the sun sets in the....
  10. believe me! I've done that before!
  11. I see in the lead up to said above, that a few of the meetings @Ell are being advertised under Cox Plate day, Everest Day etc... some interesting contradictions being sown...
  12. and I Want only one of them to get a good draw and then!
  13. I so wish! but mrs works tue and thurs and is not up for a day trip... lol, so want to be there, v good mate has one ready to GO! I did have a 13 minute with a Chris Turner and I like to think we have a plan going forward, including some involvement with me... one thing at this meeting, 'this is the beginning', some Oral History needs to start,.. All the photos I have of GW are in my 'private collection' and are not for digitalizing, but for a on course permeant display, all photos were taken by the late Ken Lush, who gifted them to me after I had spent Many Hours going through all of GW's CD starts!
  14. i'm in the process of gifting the club some photos from my collection...
  15. a aside, nice to see Keely maturing as a young racing writer! I had a wee bit to do with her a few years back. *loves* things racing!
  16. so you wouldn't have a beer with him!!!
  17. I'm sure it has! As always, its always going to be amusing whenever CW jumps up on his high horse! more power to him if his action on Track Safety leads to better safety for all involved!
  18. tick, but.. because of CW's history with Head Office! we know that they will be playing a game with that in mind. reflecting on the 'politics of racing', I presume that CW has got the Trainers CEO and Owners Reps involved??
  19. different acc in our house very much so get different offers
  20. CW, a man with a noble history of defeats! and not afraid to throw a decent $$ at those losses! Never scared to put pen to paper!
  21. I did see he has shared that "certain people have warned him to watch himself, watch his back..', your use of cannon was of concern! what with the history of recent history of CEo's and Riccarton and Rangiora and cowboys and bullets...
