Race is on for final Melbourne Cup berths By AAP 14 hours ago FShareTTweetBEmail A total of 47 horses remain in contention for the Melbourne Cup following second acceptances for the $7 million race at Flemington. Among the 47 are 15 internationally trained horses of which 11 are currently guaranteed a start in the race on November 6. With a safety limit of 24, places are still up for grabs with the winner of Saturday's Hotham Handicap gaining an automatic start while Thinkin' Big can gain a run if he wins the Victoria Derby. Currently the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained Zacada is No. 24 and will attempt to secure a Cup berth by winning the Hotham (2500m). Those horses occupying the five spots directly outside the top 24 on Monday are New Zealand-trained Sir Charles Road (25), Scottish entry Nakeeta (26), Japanese visitor Sole Impact (27), Mick Price's Miss Admiration (28) and UK visitor A Prince of Arran (29). Notable withdrawals on Monday were Cox Plate placegetter Humidor, Caulfield Cup runner-up Homesman, the injured Kings Will Dream and a trio of horses who finished unplaced in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, The Taj Mahal, Egg Tart and Big Duke. Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner Ventura Storm escaped a penalty for the Melbourne Cup but is safely in the field at No. 18. Racing Victoria handicapper Greg Carpenter said he did not penalise the past two winners of the Moonee Valley Cup, Grand Marshal and Who Shot Thebarman. "The weight conditions of the Moonee Valley Gold Cup favoured Ventura Storm given he did not carry a penalty, being winless for 740 days, and as a result he has not been penalised for the Melbourne Cup," Carpenter said. The last horse to win the Moonee Valley Gold Cup-Melbourne Cup double was Kingston Rule in 1990. Yucatan Ire is the $4.50 Cup favourite ahead of Cross Counter and Magic Circle at $11 with Avilius and Muntahaa on the next line at $13. ©AAP2018

Racing: Christmas wish for Cambridge jockey Maija Vance 30 Oct, 2018 5:00am 3 minutes to read Maija Vance hopes to be leaving the Otara Spinal Unit before Christmas. The Cambridge jockey has been there since late September after spending 10 days in Middlemore Hospital, where she was treated for the extensive injuries she suffered after her mount Zedsational crashed at the second-last fence at Rotorua on September 16. Two of her vertebrae in her spine were fractured with another three out of line and she underwent a four-hour operation to have rods and a metal plate inserted. She also suffered two punctured lungs, several broken ribs, facial injuries including six broken teeth, and she almost bit her tongue off during the smash. Each day her parents, former jockeys and trainers Bob and Jenny, have been at her bedside and she is looking forward to being released from the spinal unit to live with them in Papakura. "I'm planning to go home in a month, depending on the renovations being done for me," Vance said. "I really want to get home." Vance has made steady progress over the last month or so and said she is now more independent in her electric wheelchair. "When I first got put in it I couldn't sit upright without passing out," she said. "Now I can transfer from the bed to the wheelchair by myself. "As the broken ribs have started to heel I've got more movement in my upper body, but my back still restricts what I can do with the rods through seven vertebrae. "I've got no feeling in my waist and have been having daily injections to help prevent blood clots. "There are patches of hyper-sensitivity in my left leg but it doesn't move. My right leg, I can control a bit but there's a numb and dull sensation." Vance has been undergoing physiotherapy at the spinal unit and has requested to have the sessions increased. "Lately I've been having two or three sessions of physio per day," she said. "I've decided I'm not going to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair and I'm determined to do what I can to walk again." A daily visitor for Vance is Toro, her mini long-haired dachshund who came back from Australia with her. "Dad brings him in every morning and Mum takes him home at night after she has been in the afternoon," Vance said. "He sits on my lap in the electric wheelchair and if he's not there he's lying beside me on the bed. "When he first came in I told the hospital staff he was a soft toy. "I love seeing him each day. He makes me feel better." Vance's positive attitude and drive has also been helped by the constant flood of well wishes from friends, colleagues, racing folk and people far and wide all concerned about the popular 27-year-old, who has enjoyed success in Queensland and South Australia as well as 94 wins in New Zealand. Grace Willoughby, a Queensland jockey and Vance's former flatmate, is one of those friends who has gone that little bit extra to help Vance. Earlier this month she set up a website page (https://www.gofundme.com/help-maija-walk-again) and the fund has raised more than $24,000, while Social Racing also started off a promotion to help her. "I'm so grateful to everyone," she said. "I'm overwhelmed by all the support for me." - NZ Racing Desk

Too mild and he would never criticise other jockeys, but a couple of other aspects of the post make you wonder
-
Yes, poorly served by the hierarchy and bureaucracy Why bother? Because to not bother would be defeatist and demeaning to the efforts of the many great trainers, jockeys and horses that NZ racing has produced, and the deeds they have achieved
-
Lots of doubles, triples, quadruples etc etc, and I'm not talking about alcohol Scoobs is ultra, like real ultra sensitive about online user numbers. Now you guys are all very clever, why don't you have at a guess why

We may not agree, but congratulations on being able to formulate and articulate your own opinions Just had a look on the thread I started on the multi coloured flip flop site, and it is still wall to wall copy and paste from Whaleoil!!
-
I've said from the day I started the Jacinda Ardern thread on the multi coloured flip flop site, 6 weeks before the election, that Ardern has a lot more mettle to her than many give her credit for. Bridges is finding out just how difficult it is to lead a party. She not only did it, but did it in the pressure cooker environment of 6 weeks before an election, taking Labour from 22 to 37% and putting them in a position to be a viable Government. That is phenomenal, so already she has left a legacy, a very much unfinished one And remember, I've been a life long Nats supporter until recently. It's working between Peters and Ardern, because Peters respects her, and her views. All the other stuff you read is fake news and humbug If you recall, on the night he went with Labour, the whole thrust of his speech, was that capitalism wasn't working for the majority of NZ'ers, that would be the 56% who did not vote for the Nats

Not a word I was familiar with until just now, has a great ring to it niller A wonderful person, with a negative IQ. "Hey mom! I failed my maths test." "Omg you're such a Niller."

Apologies, should have checked!! Let's try this

Harry and Meghan on their way to NZ now, aboard a NZ Air Force plane. Noteworthy, is that the NZ Invictus Games team is also on the same plane. That must be great for those athletes, considering the games was Harry's doing, and I'm sure they will get a chance to spend a bit of time talking to the couple

Yep, deplore Facebook and the lack of control that appears to exist. At least on a site like this, abusive comments can very quickly be deleted
-
Not on BOAY Constructive criticism yes, but straight out abuse, no Please note we have a fund active, to help Maija Vance

Just another point to back up what I am saying. When RC was being run like a kangaroo court, you all had Racechat as an alternative Why didn't people go there(I realise a small number on here belonged) Because it was the same small handful of people posting their views, and one person starting most of the threads..........no disrespect to any of those people

Just think of it as a bit of balance to counter the bs propaganda about Premier racing community etc etc To be honest, the Chief took away the Users Online link, because for quite a long while the comparative data was depressing reading, like about 10-12%. Now it is starting to look really good,(and I'm letting people know that) so I'm picking it won't be long before he puts it back. And to all those that think this comparative stuff is somewhat frivolous, online users posting their opinions is the lifeblood of a chat site, without it, you can't just be a news and comps site
-
Just an observation
-
Maybe so Maria, but the simple fact is, a racing chat site needs people chatting about racing, and the more there are chatting, it attracts others to chat. Nobody chats and you can't really call it a chat site

Had the rain arrived a bit earlier at Ellerslie, it would have been a truer test of the robustness of the track. They seemed to make ground right across the track, although quite a few leaders went on with it. The only thing of note, appeared to be the number of favoured horses that ran poorly, with not abnormality found in after race vet checks Sultan of Swing, Final Suggestion, Demonetisation, Queen of the Air, Tiptronic, Surrey

They were both BOAY figures, just illustrating the impact Winx's race had on the site
