Yes I know... I remember when you were selling it.

Desoto very nice...  I recently did up a jaguar sovereign sport, beautiful shape and chrome .. I'm a sucker for european cars, especially old ones.

I'm into American cars sorry Chestnut .

Had a 34 Ford Victoria, 39 Ford Tudor, 66 Buick Riviera, 68 Buick Electra Convertable and now the 52 Desoto which I am pimping.

Not worth it when you get called names and WORSE if you have a different view unless you are very thick skinned. A bit of moderating, of which there is none, would sort a few out otherwise this site is doomed.

Yep, the vitriol is excessive to say the least  should you wish to disagree with certain posters.

Wow Hesi.. the guy that wanted to create a new forum after RC because it didn't work out for you  .. and what.. this didn't work out either after months of posts running RC into the ground you've discovered forum heaven and though shall be wonderful to everyone ? .. so now it's three ..lucky for some and another forum and again using this forum to try to create another ?

I'm disappointed and I don't think Doug deserves this.

There is a pattern here, Hesi is now hell bent on destroying Dougs site now and im told he tried to do a similar thing to an earlier site owner.

Hesi' and Pete's site RP.net has 50 Active Members with a total of 786 posts as of yesterday.

I venture to suggest that the vast majority of those posts have come from Hesi and Pete. That's understandable.

I expect that many/most BOAYERS will be encouraged to defect/move to RP. I won't be doing so, unless BOAY closes down or the site fails to deliver what I enjoy most from it ...specifically, the opportunity to share my love of racing with sane and/or sensible, quirky, wise, funny, interesting, colourful like-minded grown-ups!

It's simply called competition, usually it improves things, the lack of it in the case of the TAB, is a case in point for the opposite.  RC improved it's act when competition from BOAY came along

Sure, we would like a whole lot of new members to join, because we believe we can keep a site free of squabbling and personal abuse, with sensible and respectful moderation,.which means people(Weasel) can pursue their love of talking about racing in a relaxed and fun manner,  BUT people are free to join whatever site they want, they can actually join all 3 sites, that has never been an issue to us

Hi All

I guess the Autumn blues are creeping into our conversations a bit.  I don't want to wield the heavy hand of moderation but can I please ask that you stick to the topics.

Good to see this thread is back onto more happier topics.

I first learnt to drive in my father's shop truck - a Bedford flatdeck.  My weekly lesson was to the local dump at the back of Hokitika and we would spend an hour or more of me learning to double clutch to the tip.  If I was lucky then he would let me drive over the gravel roads up Blue Spur.

Dad was a Ford man and a petrol head.  Taught me how to drive fast and safely - mainly over Arthur's Pass and Otira or down into South Westland.  Great roads to drive on in those days.

The first car I can remember him having as a kid was a beautiful dark red Zephyr Zodiac.  Lots of chrome and big wings at the back.  He then went through a journey of upgrading his cars every two years.  Switched to Ford Falcons. Eventually XA, XB, XC, XD and on and on.

Switched to a Valiant briefly but we kids continually got car sick in it!

My first car was a Vauxhall Viva.  Second car an old model Ford Escort.

A Vauxhall Viva. Good grief  Chief.

Mind you mine was a box Anglia. Both needed holes in the floor pan so one could get the legs through and up the speed a bit.

Yeah well my Dad bought it for me to go to Uni.  That was after he moved to Brightwater from Hokitika.  I think he knew if I had anything faster I'd probably kill myself with speed.  As it was my mates and I did get into some low level flying at times.  Some funny stories.

It was very reliable.  My record from Brightwater to Lincoln was 4 hours.  It topped out at 80mph.  I raced an Audi once from Wakefield all the way to State Highway 1.  He must have been a shyte driver because I'd distance him on the windy bits and build up just enough lead to get through the long straights.  The Culverden straight was touch and go.  I also had home town advantage having driven close to 40,000 km on that route in one year!

When I was 15 and in the 6th Form, I got my Drivers Licence ...around that time my Dad bought a cheap Vauxhall Viva (or mebbe a Velox) as a birthday present for my 17 year-old brother (an apprentice jockey)...he spent hours doing it up and even put a lambskin cover on the driver's seat cos the upholstery was so crappy. I pleaded with Dad to use the car before he gave it to my brother ..."give it a bit of a training run" the weekend before...a day trip down to Lake Ferry to visit my new 'girlfriend' (she had flirted with me at the Table Tennis Champs, so I was rather smitten by this rather buxom long-haired blonde!)

Off I went, had a very nice time, thank you, and drove home, car a bit sluggish going up the hills home, but I put it down to its decrepit motor and old-age. Well, Dad didn't take long to notice something sinister...oil seeping/flowing where it shouldn't (ie the wheels).

I'd driven all the way home with handbrake on.

You blamed the buxom blonde of course?

I fear that would be a very unlikely event and just  hope ignoring the stalker/troll will suffice. Lets see how long he takes this time

This had me immediately thinking of the Flintstones vehicle.

My first was a Hillman Imp- those were the days

Actually reminds me of my mate at Lincoln who had a Morrie 1000.  Four of us jumped into it to go the 1981 Springbok Test at Lancaster Park.  We parked miles from the ground because he didn't want the protestors to damage it.  Three of the team were wearing Swandris, carried hip flasks and wore Steel Capped boots.  They were on the embankment.  My Dad was Secretary of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union and he got me a Ticket in No 1 stand.

Surreal day out!

Anyway it ended with us going to the Metropolitan Trotting Club meeting that night.  Again the old man was a member so I had a handful of plastic swingers to get into the members stand.  We got changed into our number ones in the members car park and had a great night out at the trots!!!

Yeah had a mate who owned a Model A Ford, loved in the Hutt. Now you would think you couldn't get into trouble in one of those. Wrong.

They used to drive it all round lower Hutt standing on the running board, with one hand on the steering wheel whilst  adjust ing the advance and retard on the steering wheel hub. Used to scare the bejesus  out of other commuters as you pulled along side and everyone was hanging off the side of the car. Invariably they got pulled up as one couldn't outrun a police car in a model A., but they couldnt do anything about it . Nature of the beast. Fun times back then.
