Newmarket
Who is calling at Riccarton today, he is terrible. Sounds like he has been cloned from Ian Chambers & Lauchie Marshall, wow

And as he said, it's his first go on the grass track at Riccarton, which many commentators say has many difficulties for a caller. I presume he was doing a fiil in job, so good on him.

I like him, no nonsense, just sticks to business.
Chief Stipe
Arent the Trackside presenters worse? I turn the sound down until the NZ races start or with OZ races until they switch over to the OZ commentary. Did Emily have the day off at her home track yesterday?

Yeah caught that myself and he called Dame Margaret Dame Margeruitte - usually have it on mute but I was so impressed by Sharp N Smart that I thought the aftermath might be interesting - alas no - silly me

Good call, and none of the over the top histrionics that some indulge in.
Mark D
Yip he's basically a trots caller. Takes a bit to adjust to the gallops. He did fine
The Centaur
So why then was Rail called up for Riccarton? Why wasn't Tony Lee asked? It just seems more of the policy by TAB to destroy thoroughbred racing along the lines of failing to make radio relevant. I blame Sharrock and the rest of NZTR for not making greater efforts forcing TAB to make broadcasting of racing entertaining. If Mike Tod is worth close to $1m salary then surely he must have the skills to fill in as commentator. Then again having any skills would be a bonus apart from broadcasting a reduced payout to racing.

The worst one for me is Mark Cookson. Probably a nice bloke, but he just does my head in with his constant babbling. Him and Poppywel look like they have been stuffed into their sports jackets with huge bulges in every seem, they look like they will burst, and thats before mention of the hairstyles. Like you Chief, the mute button stays on until the Aussies come on. As for that racing show that they have on Saturday morning featuring Brendon Poppywell and the two bookies, they all look like they just got out of bed, they could certainly do with a wash judging by their appearance, and the smell must be unbearable, body odour yuk. But in all honesty, the Aussies are light years ahead of us in presentation.

At 1p.m. three days a week he would put half the class off to sleep, including several formidable snorers. Lovely chap, very knowledgeable but zero ability as a communicator. Just droned on and on and,,,,Zzzzzz.
Doomed
I was out of action all day Saturday so didn't see any races, but I thought I should watch some of the Riccarton races to see what Newmarket was talking about. I watched about 7 of the races and didn't see anything wrong at all, he must have made a mistake in one of the other 3 races that I didn't watch. I think Craig Rail does a great job, we are lucky to have him. He seems to be very accurate and looks like a good race analyst. He seems to spot which horses are going well during the race, which some can't. Surely the biggest mystery of the day was how Light Up could pay $9.50 a place. I thought he went massive last start. One of the great quinellas, just when I have a day off.

I recall 'we are lucky to have him' was applied to the Jag driving pom...who was going to make NZ Racing...'the envy of the world'!🦨
Honestjohn
He doesn't bother me, however that motor mouth Nicole Sims is terrible, talks without taking a breath. Not a girl thing, as I like the Auckland girl Phillipa. Hj

Hj Obviously you would like Philippa as Philippa means lover of horses, so she is clearly in the ideal career. 1
