With respect Gammalite, I personally dont think Richard Brosnan is a NZ Legend! He had a great run of success back in the 70’s and 80’s if I recall correctly when he trained at Kerrytown near Timaru. Bonnies Chance etc. When he moved north to Auckland, think it was Pukekohe many years ago, he performed at no where near the level he did in the Canterbury region! Not too sure why he under performed for such a long time as the standard of racing in Auckland is so much less than Canterbury! He mainly trained trotters in the north and yet most of his success in Canterbury was with the pacers! Anyway, good on him for still being training winners with his son Emmett!

I personally do not condone cheating by any trainers at all! However there is an issue at play that has been around for awhile now and into the future unfortunately! It is pretty much impossible to make money as a trainer nowadays racing horses, unless you are a major stable. The young trainers that have been caught up doing things that are classed as illegal are all trying to make a profit as well trying to make a name for themselves so they can attract new owners. As we all know it is practically impossible to win the big stake money due to the AllStars stables plundering the majority of the stakes! It is pretty clear to Brodie that Harness Racing for the trainer with only a small number of owners is getting close to being over. Racing fields are going to be dominated by a small no. Of trainers unfortunately and as the older trainers move on to greener pastures, field no.s will struggle. These young trainers can just not compete with the major stables as the majority of their horses they are getting are normally past their best! Young trainers like Matt Purvis, Andrew Fitzgerald are enthusiasts that deserve their success and we certainly need to laud them rather than try and knock them out of the game! You would certainly need to be very dedicated to the sport to keep going for the modest amount you can earn from harness racing nowadays! Far easier and financially rewarding ways of making a living than working 7 days a week and generally long hours training horses.

Young Carter Dalgety is going to be a very successful driver in the years ahead. He has only just started his driving career and can often take some of our successful young drivers awhile to get the wins! However, this young bloke has started winning and driving consistently well from the start! His UDR is over 3000 and you would think he would maintain this by the way he drives. Yes he comes from a successful harness family and would’ve had plenty of coaching from Dexter and his dad Cran, and is picking up good drives, so he should be very successful, and good on him! He always comes across as a nice and intelligent bloke whenever he has been interviewed. We certainly need as many young ones coming thru the ranks to keep harness racing going!

Personally I believe it is more to do with the club personel not wanting to spend their night working on a Saturday night, so that is why they have Thursday and Friday! Auckland seems to always run on the Friday night as well and barely any Thursdays. Oz stronger class races for most of the major cities tend to always run on the Saturday night so they obviously think they will get more wagering then! Saturday night was always more enjoyable many many years ago! Friday nights are ok but most people either dont have time to get out there after a hard day at work.
