They sort of feel like the 'New' player in a way. Really they are right up there, and attacking hard in both Islands with all sorts of horses. but No trotters ? or hardly any. I think that shows the stable 'inexperience' level a bit. amidst the Sea of star horse people that make up the NZ racing fields. and Not quite Cup class either ? as BD Joe was just short of the better ones, and Alta Meteor too. Ohoka Connor was finishing near last in Open class racing and the Slot races and that earlier this year. But a Red Hot go at it is being made by the Stonewall team. so good on em'. Lots of runners. Hard to bet on them at times like you say. Tim Williams driving well is a class act, and they take on the Feature young horse racing with Gusto. Stella Rouge some good results . I had a couple of bets on Miki Bennett , alas he galloped in one of them when going to win too, so do respect their ability. and they (Stockman) even bought Two x $300,000 + record Priced Yearlings this year at the Yearling Sales So the real pressure still to go on at some stage.😂. There's Nothing quite like 'high priced flops/ or purchases to throw the mammoth pressure onto the Trainers.

The Northern ones of Telfers are often beaten , not because of the way they are driven , but the sheer CLASS of the opponents they have to race all the time at Auckland. (as in the other Trainers more so than the horses) Veterans like Tony Herlihy , David Butcher and Ray Green are in heaps of the City races and are NO Easy beats. They've been preparing horses for decades and are World class standard experienced Trainers. and once Barry and Scott Phelan step out with their stars of the track , the type that Crushed the Southerners at Addington last Spring , then the Telfer stable are reduced to just running the placings or are also rans. some South Island Stables are excellent too, and even fairly recently crushed the Northerners with Dalgetys winning the Auckland Cup , the Cullens the GN Oaks (pushing the TELFER best filly back to 4th > Stella Rouge) , and with Marketplace winning the GN Derby (Telfers best Colt 3rd > Bettors Anvil) AardieByTheSeaside could of been the best Telfer horse but Mike Tanev sent it West Aus where she is a sensation. So the Telfer stable may be the Nations leader (number of wins) but it's still a struggle to win any big races. last week they won one race from 13 to 14 starters on the Friday . just in middle grade Winter racing. NO Wins from 7 runners in the Waikato yesterday with 7 low grade country-class horses. (3 of them ran last) Yes, they (Telfers) get wins here and there through persistency. and that's what a lot of other stables should do too. Bernie Hackett (North) and Williamsons (South) do it with their trotters all the time (every week) But putting 40k on some of the runner s ????? Turn It Up lol😆 . must have more money than common sense. Good for TAB and ENTAIN though if they're taking the bets .might get the turnover Up and keep you blokes happy though as a side effect lol. 🍻😎

An Open Letter from NZTR, HRNZ and the RIB

Often the Jockeys are reminded before a Big race in front of the stewards and are reminded of what the rules are . Even the best of people need a reminder at some times. ALL Forums have to post a Code of Conduct on a side window that covers a few basics about ones behaviour and input on a forum .A lot of you blokes have passed on reading it is the problem . A lot of the forum threads I've noticed are EXACTLY about the rules being broken and what-not by jockeys. So maybe they SHould be reminded what their obligations are? ( to the horse that you carry on about frequently, and to their conduct , and to each other ) IT's a Pity the road traffic department didn't send a 'Open letter' notice to ALL Road-users. Road safety is Poor at present and conduct and rules are broken that frequently ,it's ridiculous. They need a big reminder on their conduct. No doubt you would be offended if you got one though. -

Yes I see what you've done there with several tips. Will watch out for them. Best of Luck. Richard Brosnan aged 77 now. Only drives about 8 races per year lol. That starter tonight owned by his wife I think, named No Remorse. been 45 years since 'No Response' won the Interdominion Trot for him at Addington, but he did take the title 3 years ago when the late Greg Sugars won the Grand Final for him driving a horse Richards co-trains with son Emmett named 'Maori Law'. so a 40+ year gap between Inter trot wins . very nice. Best of luck to Brooke. Hope the Treacherous Baby gets the money ok . I'm still in shock with Natalie gone and a heap of Allstars getting beat all the time. It's like the cat died or something and leaves you missing something special lol. I'm not to worried about the 'Open Letter'. Seems a nice thing to keep people 'polite' if possible. or showing some respect to the industry at least. That Thomass bloke and Forbury here are often calling jockeys/drivers/trainers cheats for whip things and race fixing and all sorts of stuff. No one wants to see that sort of thing, and they're just abusing the participants of racing sports we all enjoy all the time . might as well slink out of the country like that awful PProfit had too, so they can really Sink the boot in with every racing article that they post . think all those lads need a game of golf or something to relax , but would probably blame their clubs for a loss, and smash them up 🤣. -
I think Mr Stockman is having a crack at just about any of the Stonewall runners anytime they run?. Last Friday ADDINGTON R1 Cheer the Captain $2.70 in to $2.30 R3 Riptide $2.70 in to $2.20 R4 Arden Seascape $2.50 steady R5 Carbon $5.50 in to $4.00 R9 CC Arden steady $1.60 and R10 Miki Flyby $3.20 out to $4.00 ( the hot fav of Dalgety's won that race ) and at Auckland R1 JT Boe $2.10 in to $1.75 then Interestingly 5 runners at Double figure odds mid-program that appeared to have no money on , and all ran unplaced before in Race 10 DEBRIEF $2.10 in to $1.60 and he WON. the only Stonewall Winner for the night. None of the six Addington Stockman/Telfer runners Won with the money on . and just ONE out of seven at Auckland. I SO you're NO Chance of setting a market on Telfer runners when they're that short and Don't Win all the time. So you are certainly right with the Hard to Predict comment. Hard to say what odds they should be 🙄.

Not without a great Place chance this week either TABman . A very quick NZ mare in Race 9 Saturday night in the Ladyship stakes , Get on at $10 the place. She'll go well. has great form . The Vicar of Dibley NZ. (photo) BTW forums are just for anonymous opinion. There's no way that Racing bodies can enforce the content. I'm currently on a Footy Forum for the Lions AFL Match and the 'Tarnish Reputations thing' is about TENfold anything that comes up against Racing competitors 😆 . No footy governing body would bother controlling Carlton and Collingwood criticism in a forum lol. In fact , I think they enjoy it so that performance levels can lift to 'Fan Expectation' (or at least they can try too 😅) -
Well I know you guys are fiercely critical of the racing numbers in the Auckland region. Surely the Answer is for the MIDDLE aged Trainers , that have a Current training Base to work at , and some ability with FAST horses, all take on more horses each? simple plan. Matty White, Zac Butcher, Ben Butcher, Arna Donnelly , Tony Cameron should ALL have 10 city horses and 10 country horses racing regularly each. and 10 horses being worked up . 30 horses in training each . Not just one or 2 each . And it gives the stable junior drivers a go too then . keeps the numbers up . Keeps the WINS up.!! everything on the Up !! The Hackett/ Wallis stable can do it well . so why not them ? bit more effort needed from some . Obviously Barry Purdon and Mark Purdon have had the MILLIONAIRE owners all their careers , so have had the best horses and always got the best results accordingly. The HOPE stable and Williamsons, does it beautifully in the South Island ?, with about those numbers of horses. TELFERS have gone double that number of horses even and are Reaping the rewards !! (same as what Dixon and McMullen achieved QLD with about 80 horses on the books) . NUMBERS win Races.

I'm sure this is the same everywhere. You make very valid points about the Locations where the young can establish. It's very hard. But the Main contributing factor to the future Unsustainabilty of the industry ( IMO ) is the fact that the Aged Current Participants are just so Darn Good at it. The prep and racing of the horses. People that have been in the game for decades ( Fulltime too) are struggling to win races , as the current many aged participants will just beat you everytime. Look what the Williamsons do to the great southland horsepeople all the time , Dunns and Mark Jones and the Nairns etc, often chasing the country racing as well as having some city runners. In Aus here , I went to Redcliffe to see some mates horses go. 4 different folk with decades of experience. A couple of 4th and a couple of 6ths. The horses go so Darn Fast in town , they don't even go there anymore. and are struggling to get in the money at Redcliffe even. Darrel Graham used to have 1000 starters a year and win 100-200 races 10 years ago or so. This year he has won 3 Races ONLY. A giant of the state. Brittany Graham who does your NZ presenting Now is driving the 2 horses tomorrow night , but they will get NOTHING. So same there as here . Only the MILLIONAIRES winning, just like Brodster said with Stonewall and that ,( and the young ladies driving from good families. ) But NEW Player Owners and Trainers ??? NO CHANCE whatsoever. the game is Over . it will retire with Tony Herlihy and Barry Purdon and David Butcher and the like when they pull up stumps over the next decade. footnote: You get the odd flash new spark like kiwi lad Jack Trainor winning some Group 1 's NSW at a young age. BUT he is out for 18 months DQ so it took some 'dubious strategy to achieve some success obviously lol 🤣😂)

Larger Companies and Business's often send out memo's out to the staff , as incidents occur which prompt /force them to do so. It's not uncommon at all. mainly they remind staff to be respectful of each other and work as a team. And No Racism or Sexual Harassment will be tolerated, etc etc. Don't be offended. It's just trying to keep the peace within the industry. so look at it as a good thing. Here's who they addressed it to, which is much more than just staff I know, but there are a lot of interested parties in the racing sport,. some want to Bite the Hand that feeds them though , no matter what. and Plenty of distractors too. much more than the usual losing whingy punters . And as Chief as often said if they get too much traction , they'll shut the Sport down eventually . Greyhounds already biting the Dust. So best have a Courtesy and Appreciate the efforts of others letter A Good reminder for Everyone. to have some Respect . -
Don't worry about Grant old Forb's mate. A splendid horseman . and good friend. Watch out for that Rising Sun winner 'Fate Awaits' in the Velocity at Addington later in the year possibly. you can Swab him then when he wins it ? From the Rising Sun. Placegetter's Fate Awaits, The Janitor and Jacks Ultimate Fury all swabbed post race. Major Hot the NZer of Grimsons swabbed Pre-race (as you should 😅) and pre race bloods Hesitate of McCarthys and The Janitor of McMullens. I'll let you know if they find anything old Mate !!! Don't worry about Fixed races . When you're quality , you're quality Forbs. Actually the winning driver Trista did a years Disqualification when pulling aside to let Grant win once a little while back. Leading driver Shane Graham did 2 years DQ , just for taking the lead off a stable-mate. They get away with Jack-shit here mate. Bet Away I say !!! We police the stuff properly here mate . so stop your whining , and enjoy the action .

2nd Round Heats Fields are out , and the New Zealand Interdominion Rep PINSEEKER has been thrown in the Heat with both the last 2 Interdominion Champions in Leap To Fame and Don Hugo. Race 4 at 8.38 (NZ time) Sat. Jonny Cox will be trying to work out how best to run 3rd with Pinseeker without busting his guts 🤔. Don Hugo drew One as well , so Leap to Fame will have to 'torch' him , if he wants to win , just like he did at Cambridge. For the DRAFT Comp , about 30 of our 35 runners went ok round one. Unfortunately there is about 20 real DUD horses competing to make up the 12 horses fields. 9 horse quality Heats would of been a much better idea. nearly all the 20 duds ran in the last 4 in round One. CHIEF had a real dud in DOUGS Platter who doesn't even look up to a FFA , let alone the Interdominion , so am adding Tim's A Trooper to his team this week. a tough horse with one of our best stables. Chief is a real ' trooper 'who might get some of the money with it. good luck Chief !! I think your trotter 'London To A Brick' will gallop again too. but can't help that sorry Chief. seems a rogue. BRODIE Not 'on the money' with Eurocash , who looks a Dud .The Brodster only likes NZ dollars and not silly Euro anyway. 😎💰 , so am adding 'Constantinople' with one of Aussies best horsemen in the country Luke McCarthy to Brodsters team of 5 horses. good luck Brodster ! MIKEY has Majestic Lavros who wasn't getting much in NZ 2 years ago , and is getting even less here 🙄. so is a dud. and we'll add 'Not As Promised ' to Mikeys team to try and get some better points round 2 , after that horse ran a pretty good 2nd to the super NZ star BetNWin in the first round. Good luck Mikey !!

The Huey Awards for Excellence in Thoroughbred Racing.
Gammalite replied to Chief Stipe's topic in Galloping Chat
wow ! . I'm nominating Curious for a 'Huey Award' too then 👍🏆. anyone that goes over those fences, or any obstacle in a full gallop in front of them, deserves a medal for skillful horsemanship . they are the top of the tree to me , as getting horses to do these things is like Kenny Browne type Amazing Stuff. (i'd fall off if the horse stepped off the kerb lol 😆) Ann Browne kept some of their horses going , after the passing of Ken . The famous colours Winning here on Who Can Tell , trained by Kevin Myers for her, and being ridden by Toni Moki. -
The EVOLUTION of HARNESS Racing . How we got where we are.
Gammalite replied to Gammalite's topic in Trotting Chat
Kate often goes for training runs while at the provisional day trots in Victoria, if there's an hour or 2 in between her drives. to use up the time. sometimes runs for an hour, then jumps back in the sulky' and Wins. she is a legend !! I haven't been to the Interdom Final for quite some time , but have been to about 10 overall. The First was Gammalite winning at Auckland , when I was teenager, and I was selling $2 rosettes for all the runners, all 4 nights to support the action. Love All the horses. over to Aussie a few years later, and from Victoria, I was aboard the 9 horse semi transporter on the road up to the 1980's Brissie Interdominon that ex-pat kiwi 'Village Kid' dominated with a Clean Sweep. QLD trainer Jimmy Retchless was returning to Home after a successful Moonee Valley campaign as well . we had 8 horses onboard . Alas, The One that was going to compete in the Interdominion , went 'Down' on the truck unfortunately. We had to unload the 8 horses in the middle of no-where at a truck depot ( a 24 hour road trip Mel to Bris is) and try and give the horse a "DOUBLE Space' on the truck. In the end, He did start the first night while wearing more 'Band-aids' than Chemist Warehouse has 🙄 . I felt terrible that happened. The gutsy Horse ran 4th still . but then ran last on the 2nd night behind Village Kid (who had won by 10 lengths in very fast time) . 'Village Kid ' was the early days 'Leap To Fame' with a terrific record . even better than Vinnies 'Popular Alm' IMO. -
The Huey Awards for Excellence in Thoroughbred Racing.
Gammalite replied to Chief Stipe's topic in Galloping Chat
I'm Nominating 'Free Holmes' . in the Huey category of 'Greatest NZ horseman Ever' . this bloke could head off Sir Mark Todd even🤔. *Won the NZ Cup as a jockey riding Manton. * Won the Great Northern Hurdles and the Great Northern Steeple riding 'Liberator' . * Won the biggest harness race going, NZ Trotting Cup 1919 + 2 Auckland Trotting Cups training and driving * Won driving in the Very First INTERDOMINION ever run , the Inaugural race between Nz and Oz in 1936. (well technically he placed 2nd in the race . His own NZ horse got scratched from the Grand Final. So FREE got the call up to drive EVICUS , a Tasmanian mare. She ran 2nd in all her heats. and also 2nd in the Grand Final to another fine Tasmanian in Logan Derby . But she was declared the WINNER of the Series on Points 20 -17 ahead of Logan Derby ( as she had started off a handicap) so took home the Gold trophy and spoils. as did Free ) Logan Derby declared the winner of the race itself many years later . going undefeated for his 4 races during the series. * Raced and bred many fine thoroughbreds and Standardbred across his years. * FREE Holmes himself a fine sire! 😁 Sired Maurice Holmes ( The Maestro ) who across 50 years became the greatest NZ harness driver ever. A lasting Legacy compliments from Free 😋. (descendant young Robbie Holmes still competes in the South Island these very days) * known as 'Old Free' by the gallops folk, and 'The Old Man of Trotting' by the Trots blokes . No One will EVER achieve What that bloke did in thoroughbreds and harness. Don't think he got an OBE for services to racing like his own son Maurice 'the Maestro' did . So Maybe a 'HUEY award' could be his ? . Free Holmes (1871-1967) NZ legend. -
That seems what they're trying to do . to get a few bucks. Steven Reid already gone to South Island to get away from the Pukekohe 'nightmare sale.' is quite a poor solution for sure . Tony is an old man now, and knows the End is near for harness. Not his fault . he still tried to buy yearlings for clients and get some of them to the races as best he could. He'll just retire when the time comes with the industry winding down . Has had a fabulous career , and got the very Big wins for his great 'Purdon In-laws' too driving to show the world class level he Always operated at. Winning NZ Cups for Roy and BarryP with Chokin ,Christopher Vance and Luxury Liner. that is quite a Hattrick !!! 🏆🏆🏆 'Bolt for Brilliance' was trotting Super late in Tony's career too , before the injury. and gave him some real thrills last few years.

I'm not. Just saying the Westport type horses are not the quality that can win in the city. (Addington/Auckland , etc. Of course they can have their meetings 😅 . Sundays are good . We in QLD are running MARBURG right at this very minute Today , with No one watching , and no one worried about turnover, as No one is betting lol . Just some people having FUN with very Slow horses that can only run 29-30 second quarters so just go around for $4000 races with about $2300 to the winner , because that's about all the horses are worth anyway. Is excellent they are putting races on for these 'Westport' /Marburg type horses. Harness racing not just for the Elite Trainers . Is a great Sport. Hell even 'Melton Insulted' mentioned earlier today is in , about an hour from now. No Punter in his right mind is gunna bet on these Westport - Marburg type horses that has Any respect for their money. These are just hobbyists having a good time. The Real CLASS Acts race on Friday night NZ and Sat night OZ . they are World Class and much more deserving of the Punting dollar. If you respect getting some quality for your dollar that is 😂 But shut Auckland if you must 🙄 , all those class acts of Herlihy, Stonewalls, Barry Purdon with that many records it's embarrassing, and many many more, big time owners and sponsors. once they're gone, they're gone. Auckland Cup a fine traditional race WON by Champions. un-sure why you hate it so much.( Gammalite even won it lol 🏆💰) Long Live Westport and Marburg though 🏆🍻

Absolutely spot on Brodie . John McMullen (Jnr) is still going and does exactly that still . Has quite a large team out Marburg way (West Brisbane ) and they All race at the very slow meetings. He just has your everyday 'Westport' type horses that are worth nothing , and race for not much, and some still have the Melton prefix too. John junior's ( we always called him 'junior forever) young daughter Taleah drives all those for him. Pete drove them for his dad up to 7 years ago when Taleah left school and took over. she is still quite young at 24 . but has over 600 winning drives already. so they do win some races alright. nearly every week. Just checked Redcliffe and YES, a winner last Wednesday as par usual 'Taylors Four; , and also having a start was 'Melton Insulted' for them . so the Melton prefix you indicated 👍 . I raced John many times and we had a few quinella's late last century. but we aren't/weren't good enough to have Metro class city horses. 'Melton Insulted' with the ABSOLUTE STOCK STANDARD form of a QLD country horse of 24 starts this year for 2 wins and 3 seconds. He'll probably double that exactly, by the end of the year to Break even for his owners in the expenses. none of Johns horses are worth anything but he has fun paddling around still . In contrast , Pete McMullen is an Absolute STAR of the show. Has all City class(near Group racing quality horses) worth a HEAP of money (like The Janitor) has Millionaire owners , like Mike TANEV that Canadian 'Aardie' bloke , who has sent Pete a few horses including 2 full bred siblings of NZ champion mare Aardies Express. Pete is reaching the Stratisphere . ( just like Carter is there) and i'm hoping Pete reaches the ultimate Peak of Interdominion Champion in 2 weeks time with GUS. in the trot. Bit nervous about BET N WIN though 😎
-
I always say the racing is ruined by too many in a race. they start to get in each others way a fair bit more than normal. With Many horses chasing a start in these Big money races this Month, they decided to start 12 horses every race instead of our usual 10. it just causes issues. there's traffic jams. USA is way best with 8 runners all the time . They all get a chance every race. even from the back of the field. is hard to get held up. Gus was enormous . He was at the back from his unruly position and 12 lengths from the lead a lap out and beat just half head at the end. A sensational effort looping 4 wide from the quarter way up outside Oscar B. and beat him by 2 lengths at the end. the Longer races coming up next 2 weeks will be more his liking too. A fabulous trotter. I have a high opinion of his driver Pete's driving which differs to yours , but that's fine. it's just opinion. I looked up his season record and they put last 10 drives there too. Pete McMullen had 1 win and 4 second places in his last 10 drives so just average I spose. Grants last 10 drives were a win with Leap to Fame and 2 x 3rds . so seems quite average as well 🤔 . Races are VERY hard to win Mr Galah 😅. these 2 are our very best still. Have near 10,000 race WINS between them . incredible stuff. for this season Pete has 480 drives for 116 wins so not too bad at all so far . Usually has about 1500 drives per year for about 300 wins per year. and Grant Dixon has about 1000 drives per year for around 150-200 wins so not quite as good as Pete. Pete McMullen taking about half as 'outside' drives from his own horses too , and Grant hardly any at all.
-
STEP 1 Complete . Fate Awaits mugs em' nicely in the $300k Rising Sun Group 1. The Janitor a Brave 2nd with the Saver too , and a $30 Quinella in Da Bank . you can't help but win on these Top horses. Bring on Gus and Leap To Fame in 2 weeks time . could be the 2 Interdominion Champs then. Cheer em' On !!!
-
Round one Interdominion comp Totals to take into Round 2 Next Saturday night. Ranga leads the field with his 10 points bonus scored tonight, but won't have that in next round . some Longer race Heats are on the cards for Next week. so some will be even further behind Leap To Fame than what they were tonight 😂 Nearly all horses performed well but some might be traded next round that just are/were not up to it e.g like Eurokash and Majestic Lavros for Brodie and Mikey to get them a more competitive horse for next 2 weeks. Rangatira 43 Pacers + 18 trotters pts = 61 points The Galah 27 Pacers + 29 trotters pts = 56 points Chief Stipe 26 Pacers + 9 trotters = 35 points Brodster 24 Pacers + 9 trotters = 33 points Gamma 32 Pacers + 13 trotters = 45 points Mikey 18 Pacers + 10 trotters = 28 points TABman 24 Pacers + 27 trotters = 51 points LEAP To Fame 16 points Pacing and 16 trotting back to the swab box = 32 points

Trotters Time. Heat 1 Trotters Hot fav London To A Brick caused a false start , and then just didn't want to trot the 2nd go. bad luck Chief. Meanwhile The GALAH has been backed into Hot Favourite 😳 in the BOAY Interdominion Comp by nailing the Quinella in Heat 1 for the trotters , that weren't far off dead heating.👍 The Locals Golden Sunset 16 pts and Gus 13 points collect The Galah an impressive 29 points .
