Heard and read what Mark Hurrell said as well about going forward! Not sure why he did say that as well, as he made no effort throughout to put the horse in the race. Robyn’s Playboy at his very best would have slaughtered that field as he was once touted as a NZ cup horse, may have even started in it s few years back? However the horse has not performed to a high level for a few years now. He was unlucky in the straight and did not get a run so maybe bext start those punters on today will get their money back? Southland form can be very hard to follow too often. -
Well you had to laugh. Or perhaps if you backed robyns playboy maybe swear a little. But the hrnz website highlighted M Hurrells drives and trackside interviewed him early on in the day. Then greg o'connor again repeated the tactics Mr hurrell said he would be using early in the race. That was go forward and look for the lead. I'm guessing it was a result of all that publicity and confidence that punters heavily supported the horse late. in the first attempted start ,which was a false start,iit looked like mr hurrelll intended to go back,no can't be i thought. Then blow me down and knock me over with a feather, at the second attempt he indeed very heavily restrains robyns playboy ,all the way back to last.There he sat,under a strong hold and there he was at the finish,still under a hold as the horse who had raced behind him at the back improved around him and stuck ion well for 3rd. i don't think anyone was expecting to see those tactics. The moral of the story,well i'm not sure. Maybe don['t read any drivers thoughts in the media and keep trackside on mute. i do see the funny side of it all,even though i had a wee investment on the horse based on the driver using the tactics he said he would pre race. oh well,on to the next race i suppose. -
And why is it not in Britain, the UK, France, Germany, Nth America, etc.? If jockeys can't count up to 10, they should be sent back to school before they get their licence renewed. Australasia are so out of line with international best practice, it's a joke, and a great shame on our industry for both welfare and integrity. Disgusting stuff. -
Good to see the knowledgeable Matt Markham on Friday Night Lights, tonight! He is a harness enthusiast and has good connections and it isn’t talk about what he likes. Be a good idea to have him on with Greg for all Addington meetings in future. I see that Brittany Graham from Oz is going to be joining Trackside next year, which is good to see they are trying to appeal to the younger set.

By Brigette Solomon A victory in the last race at Manawatu yesterday brought up significant milestones for both horse and driver. It was Wilson House’s 100th driving win, and Santanna Mach’s 20th. The victory was the 20-year-old House’s fourth of the day, also rounding out a training treble for his father, Canterbury-based trainer Michael House. “It was a good day and nice to get that win on Santanna Mach,” says House, “he’s a pretty cool old horse, I’ve had four wins on him now so he’s been pretty good to me.” The 10-year-old gelding started a $2.10 race favourite in the Christmas Function Book Now December 10 and 12 Mobile Pace. House drove conservatively off the mobile to sit four back the fence in the early stages. A tussle for the lead between The Elite Athlete and stable mate Morere resulted in a strong tempo with Morere eventually leading, and with just over a lap to run House elected to move forward to lead with little challenge. Over the final lap, Stealers Wheel would move to sit outside the leader applying pressure from the 400 metre mark to lead by a narrow margin until midway down the home straight. But Santanna Mach refused to lie down, picking himself up to battle on and out tough Stealers Wheel to win by a head. Today’s win brought the Santanna Blue Chip gelding’s lifetime earnings to just shy of $230,000 from his 20 wins and further 48 placings. “At ten, he is still racing well and is competitive as we saw today and Dad recently realised that Santanna Mach has raced at nearly every race course in New Zealand with the exception of Blenheim, Westport and Omakau, said House “w are going to try to get him to those tracks to race in the coming months which would make him possibly the only horse in New Zealand to have raced on every course.” House is having his best season yet driving 51 winners to date and is currently sitting second in the NZ Junior Driver’s Premiership, just four wins behind leader Sam Thornley. Carter Dalgety sits in third position with 49 wins. “There’s still a few weeks to go but hopefully it’s a good dog fight for the premiership right down to the line,” said House who next drives at Motukarara on Sunday. House’s other winners at Manawatu yesterday were Bigger The Bettor (R2), Gotta Elect Bill (R4) and Doctor Tim (R5). View the full article
