Racing Victoria stewards have delayed making a decision on the future of Global Harmony after the Lindsay Park-trained former Hong Kong galloper refused to jump from the barriers at Pakenham on Saturday. Listed as the $5.50 second bookmaker favourite with PlayUp for the BM84 The David Bourke Memorial (1400m), Global Harmony loaded smoothly but failed to move when the gates opened, leaving connections and punters frustrated. This isn’t the first time the gelding has exhibited such behavior. Earlier in the year, Global Harmony failed to jump in two Hong Kong starts, earning the nickname the “Chautauqua of Hong Kong,” in reference to the champion Australian sprinter Chautauqua, who was retired after repeatedly refusing to leave the gates late in his career. Lindsay Park co-trainers JD and Will Hayes had been confident the issue was resolved after Global Harmony jumped cleanly in two recent jumpouts and an official trial. However, the gelding displayed his stubborn streak once more on race day. He’s just a smart animal, has got a clock in his head, and doesn’t jump past 12pm.” The stewards’ report detailed the incident, stating: “As the start was effected, Global Harmony stood in the barriers and took no part in the event. Stewards took evidence from co-trainers Will and JD Hayes in relation to the gelding’s barrier record, both in Australia and Hong Kong. Stewards will now review all relevant material before considering the gelding’s racing future and the nature of any embargo which may be placed against Global Harmony.” Stewards have chosen to liaise with Hong Kong officials before deciding on Global Harmony’s future, leaving the horse’s racing career in limbo. I think it went from good to heavy in about two days. Bloody tough on the poor Southern trainers and jockeys. They get hardly any opportunities. I think all the ballots had to scratch out of several races. I had a look this morning and noticed hardly any scratchings from horses safely in the fields, which was amazing considering they accepted on a good track and were prepared to race on a heavy track. Compare that with Te Rapa yesterday. 10 scratchings and 7 starters in a maiden race on a track that was perfectly ok. I think there's a Taranaki meeting next week with average field sizes of about 6. There is a real imbalance in opportunities. Today doesn't help. -
Why have Motukarara running R51+ cup between Westport and Reefton? Only 10 for Westport, maybe a bonus for winning both Reefton and Westport Cups or bonus for best performer/s over both races, Westport produce one of the biggest turnovers so why don't HRNZ instead of shuffling their turnover to Auckland why not some returned. -
