First-time starter MONIQUE EN VOL (f, 2, Flightline–Monique's Candy, by Candy Ride {Arg}) got a beautiful seam up the rail through the Kentucky Downs stretch Saturday to become the sixth winner for her freshman sire (by Tapit). The St. Elias homebred broke at 5-2 from the middle of the gate let nearly the entirety of the field go ahead of her, choosing to sit back and come from off the pace while saving ground through the opening furlongs. Able to make her way up the inside around the sweeping far turn, she came for home from mid pack and had all the room in the world open up ahead of her, striking the front just into the final furlong while a host of closing pursuers fanned out wide to challenge. Confidently handled by Florent Geroux, Monique En Vol came home under hands heels over race favorite Viaggio (Vekoma). Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0. O/B-St. Elias Stables, LLC; T-Brad Cox. In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victory of Naomis at Saratoga. Naomis Shines A Light On Placid Waters Chad Brown recorded his record-extending seventh win in the GII Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga with Naomis. The filly, who races for an ownership group, was making her U.S. debut, fresh off a victory in the G2 Prix Sandringham in her native France (video). City Light's record in the U.S. from just three crops is six winners from eight runners (75%). Two of those winners have won stakes with Naomis's tally. His City Girl sealed her victory in the GIII Beaugay Stakes at the now-defunct Aqueduct. The Haras d'Etreham resident counts seven stakes winners worldwide, with Zabeel Light and Mimos both winning at the Group 3 level in France. Lunar Superiority At Del Mar Simon Callaghan saddled Full Moon Tonight (Oasis Dream) to run out a one-length winner at Del Mar on August 30 (video). Bred by Promenade Bloodstock, the three-year-old filly races for Lerner Racing, Alice Bamford and Marsha Naify. Sold for 20,000gns as a 2024 Tattersalls Somerville yearling before making 60,000gns out of the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale to Howson and Houldsworth Bloodstock, the bay made a trio of starts in Ireland for the Equinox Syndicate and Gavin Cromwell, breaking her maiden at Leopardstown in May. Sold privately, the daughter of Dixie Dreamer (Exceed And Excel) is one of three winners for her dam and her last reported foal. Under the G3 World Trophy Stakes-winning second dam Dixie Belle (Diktat) is the stakes winner Blanche Dubawi (Dubawi). The recently pensioned Oasis Dream has sired 37 winners from 69 runners (54%) in the U.S. His 10 stakes winners there are anchored by GI Gamely Stakes victress Tuscan Evening, and GI Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf Stakes heroine Midday. Dubawi Filly Takes Presque Isle Feature Stephanie Seymour Brant's Isadora Duncan (Dubawi) prevailed at Presque Isle Downs on August 26 (video). The White Birch Farm homebred is trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott. A full-sister to stakes winner and multiple Grade I-placed Opulent Restraint, the winner is out of GII Ballston Spa Stakes heroine Significant Form (Creative Cause). The dam was covered by Sierra Leone this spring. Darley's Dubawi is credited with 50 winners from 97 runners in North America (51%). His stakes winners there are anchored by 11 Grade I scorers. Repeat Winners Earning his first stakes win for trainer Phil D'Amato in August was Sorrento Sky (Prince Of Lir) (video). The five-year-old gelding claimed the GII Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar for the Benowitz Family Trust, CYBT, McLean Racing Stables, Saul Gevertz, Marc Lantzman and Michale Nentwig. Also trained by D'Amato to a graded score on August 22 was King of Gosford (Zoustar). Owned by the Benowitz Family Trust, CYBT, Saul Gevertz, Michael Nentwig and Jeremy Peskoff, the five-year-old entire captured the GII Del Mar Mile Stakes (video). Mark Grier's Evershed (Churchill) starred in the GIII Waya Stakes at Saratoga for trainer Arnaud Delacour on August 28 (video). It was the four-year-old filly's first stakes victory. I Am I Said (Almanzor), who races for Dahman, won for the fourth time in seven starts at Delaware Park on August 28 (video). The Miguel Clement trainee is a half-brother to two group horses, including group winner Enfjaar (Lope De Vega). Shelzawa (Zelzal) returned a winner at Saratoga for Chad Brown on August 29 (video). Lightly raced, the Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, William Strauss, William Rucker and Michael Caruso colourbearer was making her fifth start. Trainer Todd Pletcher, who saddled two of the three entries in Saturday's GIII With Anticipation, got both home in the exacta as LIAM'S LAW (c, 2, Colonel Liam–Quickasakitten, by Kitten's Joy) led in stablemate Bold Leadership (Not This Time) at Saratoga. Bold Leadership, who went off favored at 1-2, leapt in the air at the break and spent most of the race third while Liam's Law got away to a beautiful beginning and led Perfect Dream (Corniche) easily through fractions of :24.49 and :49.11. The trio stayed compact around the far turn and swung into the stretch together as Liam's Law found a new gear to burst clear of his stablemate while Perfect Dream shortened stride back to third. Bold Leadership challenged inside the final sixteenth but couldn't get past as 7-5 shot Liam's Law took this group gate to wire. Saratoga Maidens, Presented By Keeneland Off what was a strong unveiling at the Spa Aug. 8, U.S.S. Valor (War of Will–Spangled Banner, by Tiz Wonderful) matched his odds as he rolled to break his maiden in the opener over the same course on Saturday. The effort earned the colt a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard.' Spotlighted by this paper's own Steve Sherack in his 'Second Chances' series, favorite U.S.S. Valor was up on the pace here, but had no trouble securing the front around the far turn. The rest of the race looked like a workout as the Team Valor homebred romped the rest of the way.
