    • i assume the ones recommended in the horse utilisation report. it first came out 15 months ago. I've highlighted that report a couple of times. it talked a lot of common sense. That may have been what confused the decision makers. The wheels seem to turn so slow sometimes.

    • The countdown to NZB’s 2025 National Weanling Sale is underway, with a compact yet quality catalogue of 134 youngsters now available to view online at www.nzb.co.nz. Set to be held on Thursday 26 June at Karaka, the Sale offers an abundance of opportunity for both pinhookers and end users to secure quality stock, with the session a proven source of racetrack and investment success. Recent stakes-performers sourced from this Sale include Jedibeel (NZ) (Savabeel), Pivotal Ten (NZ) (Ten Sovereigns), plus Group One winners Pignan (NZ) (Staphanos), Callsign Mav (NZ) (Atlante), Jennifer Eccles (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle), Karaka Millions 2YO winner, Tokyo Tycoon (NZ) (Satono Aladdin), and more. Buyers will have the opportunity to secure progeny of established sires Proisir, Savabeel, Super Seth, Shamexpress, Almanzor, Per Incanto and Shocking, plus emerging sires Ace High, Ardrossan, Satono Aladdin, Sword of State, U S Navy Flag and Hello Youmzain to name a few. “We are pleased with the catalogue assembled, it is a great opportunity for local pinhookers, traders and end-users alike,” commented NZB’s Bloodstock Sales Manager Kane Jones. “We’ve seen some outstanding pinhooking results from this Sale, with a number of weanlings proving profitable within a relatively short timeframe. “Plus, the record these graduates have on the track speaks volumes, from just a small catalogue each year.” The 2025 edition of the National Weanling Sale will see Windsor Park Stud’s first season sire Profondo grace the Karaka sales ring. With nine lots on offer, the son of Deep Impact made a big impression on breeders in his first season at stud, covering 177 mares. “He was well supported by breeders in his first and now second year. He is a talented son of Deep Impact and an asset to our breeding ranks,” added Jones. “There is healthy demand for our New Zealand product, given our domination on racetracks across the likes of Australia and Hong Kong in recent seasons.” “There is certainly something for everybody and the Karaka Millions eligibility is a big bonus,” he added. Weanlings entered in the Sale will be available for inspections at the on-farm parades, due to take place in early June, and on-site at Karaka Sales Centre, with NZB agents available to inspect on behalf of buyers. • Do You Just (So You Think) steps up to a more suitable distance at Ellerslie and a bold showing is expected from the colt in his juvenile grand final. The Wexford Stables representative will close out his campaign in Saturday’s Listed Skycity Champagne Stakes (1600m) ahead of a break. “We put him aside after a spring preparation and brought him back with these longer two-year-old races in mind,” said Andrew Scott, who trains in partnership with Lance O’Sullivan. “That’s what he is genetically bred to do, and we think as he gets out in trip his chances will get better.” In his two most recent Te Rapa outings, Do You Just was runner-up on his return and then finished midfield in the Listed Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (1400m) under Warren Kennedy, who retains the ride. “We were very pleased with his last run, he got a little wide and a little keen and just peaked on his run and has taken good improvement,” said Scott, who recently celebrated his 1,000th training success. “He’s going to relish the mile and we’ve taken the blinkers off and will put side winkers on to help him find more rhythm.” Do You Just will head for a rest after the weekend and return for quality age group features in the spring. “He’ll go for a wee break and we think he will continue to get better. He’s a big boy and still quite leggy and he’s got a good future,” Scott said. Stablemate Grande Gallo (NZ) (Belardo) has enjoyed a lucrative preparation and more of the same is expected of the Belardo mare in the Network Visuals Handicap (1400m), in which she will be aided by Triston Moodley’s 2kg claim. “She’s been super consistent all season and has won around Ellerslie before,” Scott said. Grande Gallo has put together a brace of wins and two placings from her last five appearances. “She steps up to the 1400m and she’s had a wee gap between runs, but we’ve kept her work up to run the seven furlongs and she’s aided by a good gate (one),” Scott said. “She is so genuine and we wouldn’t expect anything but another competitive run from her on Saturday.” Shocking five-year-old Reptak (NZ) (Shocking) will shoot for two wins on the bounce when he steps out in the Manuka Doctor Handicap (1200m). Jockeys’ Premiership winner in waiting Craig Grylls has been booked to partner the gelding, who made all the running to score over the course and distance when resuming. “He has to take another step up to the Rating 75 grade, but he won with a good bit of authority last time and has been around Ellerslie a couple of times, he trialled really well there before he won,” Scott said. The stable also likes the chances of Jon Snow’s son King Of The North (NZ) (Jon Snow) in the Join TAB Racing Club Handicap (2200m) with Moodley to guide the four-year-old. “He got back on a very slow pace the other day and his sectionals were quite good,” Scott said. “He’s a promising staying horse and we think he can bounce back into form, he’s another one with a really good chance.” View the full article
    • John and Karen Parsons had plenty of firepower on the truck to Wednesday’s Riccarton Park Synthetic meeting and their topliners delivered, collecting both open handicaps with Tumuch (NZ) (Satono Aladdin) and Miss Brittany (NZ) (Sacred Falls). The Balcairn couple picked up their first win on the card in the Speights Summit Ultra On Tap Rating 60 (1400m) with Sway Up (NZ) (Highly Recommended), and two races later, the talented Tumuch started as one of the shortest-priced favourites to step out on the course when contesting the Riccarton Park Function Centre Open Handicap (1600m). Closing a $1.10 favourite, Tumuch was identified as near-unbeatable by punters after he put on a galloping lesson when winning the Easter Cup (1600m) on the surface a fortnight earlier. In the hands of Krishna Mudhoo, Tumuch settled on the rail in the trail of frontrunner Peecee Pussycat (NZ) (Pure Champion). The leader gave a good kick on the corner but was swiftly overtaken by Charbano (NZ) (Vespa) and Tumuch, the latter seemingly cruising into the final 100m. There were a couple of tense moments for favourite-backers as Charbano put up a big challenge, but when Mudhoo asked for an extra effort, Tumuch was too classy and took the race by a half-neck. Karen Parsons watched on at home and was proud of the son of Satono Aladdin, who had carried seven kilograms more than the remainder of the field. “He did very well, especially with the big weight,” she said. “We’ll keep going through the poly season with him.” The victory was Tumuch’s seventh in a 23-start career, of which he has collected over $260,000 in stakes for John Parsons and Peter Lyon. Another member of the Parsons stable making waves this season is Miss Brittany, and the mare was back in the winner’s circle for the fourth time in her last five starts when taking out the Happy Birthday Max Skelton Open Handicap (1200m). Despite her sterling form this season, Miss Brittany was among the middle market for the race, with a two-horse war identified between Spartan (NZ) (War Decree) ($4) and Bouyant (NZ) (Dalghar)($4.10). In his typical fashion, Spartan surged for the lead early, eventually crossing Miss Brittany, who sat in the trail inside of her stablemate La Bella Nera (NZ) (Sweynesse). It would be those three that would end up fighting out the finish, with a perfectly-timed run by jockey Tina Comignaghi sending Miss Brittany across the line in front narrowly ahead of La Bella Nera. Parsons had anticipated a bold showing from Miss Brittany, while La Bella Nera’s effort in a fresh state came as a welcome surprise. “It was expected and Tina just waited and waited on her,” Parsons said. “It’s like she’s stood in the manure heap or something, she’s just grown and grown this season, probably about a foot. “I was quite surprised with La Bella Nera, she went very well too.” A daughter of Sacred Falls, Miss Brittany races in the colours of her breeders, Beverley Jones Racing. She is the first foal to race out of Miss Alice, of whom the Parsons trained to win a Gr.3 South Island Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1600m) in 2015. Comignaghi and the Parsons combined once again to win the following event, with speedy mare Funfetti (NZ) (Embellish) putting four lengths on her stablemate Hey Mickey (NZ) (Zed) to win the Firefighters Challenge – Phil Leabourn Rating 75 (2200m).
